Showcasing Authentically American Style

For four days in early May, Indigenous fashion designers, models and artisans from across North America came to Santa Fe, N.M., for Native Fashion Week.

The event, new this year, included runway shows, panel discussions, pop-up shops and, of course, parties. It was put on by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the longtime organizer of the Indian Market, a popular showcase of Indigenous-made goods in Santa Fe
.

I'm delighted to see examples of Native American fashion outside the powwow circuit, and touching on the fashion industry.

This poem is spillover from the June 6, 2023 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] siliconshaman. It also fills the "Praise or Humiliation" square in my 6-1-23 card for the Kinky and Unusual Situations Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to the Shiv, Marionettes, and Finn Family threads of the Polychrome Heroics series. It follows "A Great Deal of Energy and Determination" so read that first or this won't make much sense.

I got a good chunk of my online shopping done today, using my holiday money. Cyber Monday is becoming much more of a thing, with much bigger discounts. In the past I saw only a dollar or two difference, so hitting the sales wasn't a big deal. But now they're huge, and I wound up rushing trying to get the magazines and my T-shirts done. *headdesk* Next year I'll try and remember to start early in the day to avoid this hassle.

Then a couple of the magazines weren't available, which was annoying. Also I noticed that some magazines have started lying about the number of issues, pretending that a double issue counts as two issues, but it says "12 issues" when you only get 6. So watch carefully for that trap. :/

I went out thrift shopping today.  In addition to clothes, which I was looking for, we also found a medium cooler, a cookbook, and a quilt rack.  :D

Shopping for women's tops: out of a dozen or more items, only one fit.  Most had sleeves too tight, seams in weird places, buttons that wouldn't close over my tits, hems that rode up if I raised my arms, etc.  Fuck it, I'll go see if the men's section has clothes that are less dumb.

I found several tops and several pants in the men's section, including a leaf-camouflage shirt and purple velour pants.  \o/  That also had a rack of uniform parts, which included practical pants with pockets I can fit my whole hand into.  #pocketwin!  So that was a really nice find.

I did go back to the women's section for sleepwear.  While it's much harder to find flannel now, it is much easier to find wonderful soft stretchy velour.  So I got a really nice set of pajamas and another top, both in velour, and a misfiled set of fall-colored plaid pants in a textured fabric definitely not meant for sleeping in.  The whole range of sleepwear, loungewear, leisurewear, athleisure, athletic -- and this time a new term, soft wear -- is very good for fitting bodies that aren't standard shape and/or disdain weird fashion distortions.

I'll call that a success.

My partner showed me this lovely picture of a caddisfly larval tube, made from colorful pebbles. They use wet silk to glue together any objects of appropriate size to create a mobile shelter. Usually that means tiny pebbles, shells, or sticks. But I've long been a fan of the art created when someone gives them jewels.

We went up to visit Dad today.

I filled two bags with clothes to donate.  Looking at Mom's clothes reminds me of capsule wardrobes.  She had clusters of things -- red-black-white, camel-sage-mauve, etc.  The bold bright colors and the muted hippie colors.  Really nice things in leather, cotton, linen.  Often there are 2-3 things in the same color or print that go together, but can mix-and-match.  Those are harder to find nowadays, but used to be some stores had whole lines of separates meant to mix like that, and we'd buy them in sets.  It's sad to give them away, but almost nothing fits me.  On the other hand it makes me smile to imagine someone shopping a thrift store and finding these treasures, especially someone desperately scrounging for an interview outfit.  I've found enough treasures in thrift stores, it's only fair to give some back.

On the way home, we swung by a lakeside park that Doug had found earlier.  It was in a rather wooded area.  I spotted a bunch of beehives edging the woods not far from the park.  The positioning, not at all usual, made me think there's at least one bee whisperer up there who's simply plonking down hives near wherever wild bees like to nest.  I also saw an acre or two of sugarbush with buckets hung to tap the trees.  :D

We also stopped at a new African store.  It's a little bigger than Ashar.  We picked up guava nectar and a couple other beverages.  They have a ton of things I've only heard of, and even more that I haven't.  All sorts of African greens and spices and dried fish.  If we find African recipes calling for unusual ingredients, we can look there for those.  They also have lots of flavoring things where you can buy packets or cubes one at a time.  That could be interesting to explore.

For my friends who really, really don't fit into the cis boxes: eldritch nonbinary.
ysabetwordsmith: Cartoon of me in Wordsmith persona (Default)
Previously I mentioned the use of maybe-colors in unisex or nonbinary dressing, so I decided to list some examples. The neutrals (black-gray-white in cool, brown-tan-ivory in warm) are unisex, but most people want accent colors. There are also some oddball neutrals that mix warm and cool tones.

Here's a thoughtful article about sewing a wardrobe based on dresses and layers for big, curvy girls.

I have some thoughts on layers from my perspective in Renaissance / fantasy / Pagan garb as well as a passing familiarity with fashion history in general. If you want to explore this further, ask your local librarian for the fashion history books. These are big, coffeetable books with lots of colorplates to show fashions in different times and places. Things you can do with dresses and layers ...

A discussion about brafail led to a discussion about learning to sew and making your own clothes. It is much easier to fit the clothes to your body than make your body fit the clothes. Fuck fashion! You deserve to be comfortable. Also, it's often cheaper to make your own, you get exactly what you want, and it usually lasts longer.

I highly recommend sewing. Do try both hand sewing and machine sewing. The latter is faster, but not everyone is good with mechanical things, and some materials or techniques are easier to do by hand. Basic sewing, however, is quite easy for most people, and you can do a LOT with it.

Someone mentioned having difficulty with fashion choices, especially color matching. I've done a lot of research on this due to some Terramagne stores working a lot better than here, and characters having different and distinctive tastes. So I listed some ways to make life easier if you find clothing choices a chore instead of a joy ...
