These are the setting notes for "A Great Deal of Energy and Determination."
The fabric archive and related design resources live in a big building of yellow brick that wraps around a grassy courtyard. The terra cotta plaza is likely a later addition since it doesn't match.
Inside, several rooms have racks of fabric samples from suppliers around the world. See the left side and the right side.
Additional fabric samples are organized in swatch books. These typically present multiple product lines from the same company organized into pages of related fabric types or colorways. Other swatch books are assembled by hand to offer a wider range of options from different producers in the same fabric, a certain color, a major print pattern, etc. This allows designers to search for useful products based on whatever they've already decided to use.
More rooms hold an extensive library of patterns from historic to contemporary, including both hardcopy and digital. Dolce & Gabbana are wealthy enough to afford a truly world-class collection. Museum-quality pieces are stored or displayed with proper archival techniques in a separate room dedicated to older or more significant items.
The fashion design workshop spans several large rooms with tables, chairs, sewing machine workstations, ironing stations, assorted styles and sizes of dressmaker dummies, and other specialty equipment.
The resource room contains an extensive selection of garments and accessories from Dolce & Gabbana as well as other designers. This makes it easy to assemble sample outfits to see how a new prototype works in context. It also provides opportunities for barter, since most of the items are valuable and some are actually unique. The archive with samples of everything created by Dolce & Gabbana is a separate (and very large) area.
The lounge provides a place for people to rest, relax, socialize, and swap ideas. It is stocked primarily with thrifted furniture, mostly a jumble of eye-catching antiques, some of it dating back to the early days of Dolce & Gabbana as a couple and creative team. The large, opulent paintings were acquired later.
Stèfanu Gabbana's office has walls lined with bookcases, a big map of Italy behind a pale wood desk, an antique globe, a white leather executive chair, and two guest chairs.
Doménicu Dolce's office has a big map of Italy on the wall above his dark wood desk, a pale wood chair, and metal bookcases.
