Enid Sinclair

Enid Sinclair is Wednesday's roommate at Nevermore Academy. This is a disaster that any school administrator should know better than to set up, because students with opposite personalities and needs are bound to clash in ways that cause problems for administration. That's exactly what happens when Enid moves out, a thing that administrators try very hard to avoid. In fact they put a lot of effort into researching how to pair compatible roommates to prevent such problems, because a bad mismatch can wreck academic performance and health alike. While it's true that opposites can attract, more often they repel, and forcing incompatible people together rarely ends well.

The two girls are opposites in ways that make it uncomfortable for them to live together. Enid is an extrovert; Wednesday is an introvert. Enid is Hint; Wednesday is Ask. Enid has high skin hunger; Wednesday has touch aversion. While Enid claims to accept that Wednesday is not a hugger, the repetition of that indicates it is a hard thing to remember. Enid is a sensory-seeker who loves bright colors and clutter; Wednesday is a sensory-avoider who requires a minimalist environment and is allergic to color. And so on. These are fundamental personality traits that tend to remain stable, so when these natures and needs conflict, that's a very difficult problem to solve -- especially for young, inexperienced people who haven't even finished developing the things they're actually good at, let alone things they're not good at but would be helpful to someone else. In fact, trying to be someone you're not is ruinous to health and happiness. This makes mixed relationships very challenging. These differences could work as complementary strengths, if the girls knew what they were doing, but so far they mostly don't.

As a result, Wednesday and Enid have a very rough time together in the first season. They get thrown together by adults, and then Enid declares friendship because she is desperately lonesome. Placing a touch-averse introvert with a touch-starved extrovert is definitely a case of throwing a rubber bone to a starving werewolf. So Enid makes repeated and effusive overtures to Wednesday, trying to entice her into the school's social dynamics, while Wednesday is more often baffled and annoyed by them than pleased. Conversely, Wednesday is self-centered or goal-oriented rather than sociable, misses social signals, and leaves Enid feeling ignored, used, or otherwise hurt.

Yet somehow, the two girls manage to form a connection. Most of this comes down to Enid's sheer dogged persistence in insisting that they are friends. But there are times when Wednesday spots a chance where working together would benefit both, like when Enid wants to win the Poe Cup and Wednesday just wants to make Bianca Barclay look bad. Other times, Wednesday manages to figure out just enough of a social situation to use it in her own favor, like trading assignments on Outreach Day so that Wednesday can get into Pilgrim World and Enid can spend time pursuing Ajax Petropolus. Notably, Ajax indicates that "Gorgons are taught not to engage," a likely reason why he didn't pick up Enid's strong hints of sexual/romantic interest. Despite the conflicts, Wednesday and Enid become quite attached, which shows more later in the season, especially in Episode 8. Enid finally "wolfs out" and attacks the Hyde to prevent it from hunting Wednesday, and Wednesday actually hugs Enid for once.

The level of chemistry between Wednesday and Enid vastly exceeds the feeble sparks between Wednesday and any of the boys thrown at her for standard plot reasons. This leads viewers to wonder what kind of relationship the girls actually have, or could have -- roommates, friends, lovers? A large majority of fans support a lesbian relationship, nicknamed Wenclair. "And they were roommates" is a queer trope, due to the common misinterpretation of queer relationships as such.  Consider the sun/moon lesbian pairing: if ever there was such a couple, it's Enid/Wednesday.  (See the flags.)  Given the (canon-alleged) male love interests, bisexuality is plausible, albeit much more for Enid than for Wednesday. A few folks feel that they aren't very good for each other, and would both be better off with someone else, but this is a minority opinion. Another variation is people who read Wednesday as aromantic and/or asexual, thus preferring to see her without a sex/romance partner at all. However you choose to interpret their relationship, canon has some background you can use to support that choice, making this an exceptionally versatile pairing.

Of course, we could have our fancake and eat it too: there's no reason Wednesday and Enid couldn't have a queerplatonic relationship. That's pretty much what they're doing already, even if Wednesday doesn't know what the merry hell to do about that. And oh look, that flag is even in their colors!

A major aspect of Enid's character is her sensory-seeking, which is most visible in her bohemian style of clothing and room decor. She adores bright colors, the more the merrier, although she leans more warm than cool. She mixes different patterns together into a cheerful jumble. Enid also retains a childlike taste -- while most teens desperately avoid anything childish, she has a pile of stuffed animals big enough to hide Uncle Fester with room to spare! While these things annoy Wednesday, they are essential to Enid's personality and a core part of the contrast between the two girls. You can watch the relationship play out through the colors, from Wednesday stripping her half of the moon window to Enid making matching "snoods" (which are not really snoods, but infinity scarves) in each of their signature colorways. Moving forward, watch for more color-coded relationship dynamics.

If you like Enid's fashion sense, take a closer look. Often she piles colors and patterns on top of each other with merry abandon, in bohemian style. She also owes a lot to cake style (plain and fancy versions), which combines bright pastels. However, Enid also makes use of a few neutral basics, mostly warm tones, which most folks would use more of in their own wardrobe. See examples for summer, spring or fall, and winter.

Enid Sinclair: What the hell did you do to my room?
Wednesday Addams: Dividing our room equally. It looks like a rainbow vomited on your side.

Enid Sinclair: Let me give you a wiki on Nevermore's social scene.
Wednesday Addams: I'm not interested in participating in tribal adolescent clichés.
Enid Sinclair: Well, then use it to fill your obviously bottomless pit of disdain.

Wednesday: Silence would be appreciated.
This is my writing time.
Enid: Your writing time?

Enid Sinclair: Tonight was just the icing on the birthday cake you couldn't even be bothered to cut. You'll use anyone to get what you want, even if it means putting them in danger. We could have died tonight because of your stupid obsession.
Wednesday Addams: But we didn't.
Enid Sinclair: I've tried really, really, really hard to be your friend. Always put myself out there. Thought of your feelings. Told people, “I know she gives off serial killer vibes, but she's really just shy.”
Wednesday Addams: I never asked you to do that.
Enid Sinclair: You didn't have to, because that's what friends do. They don't have to be asked. And the fact that you don't know that says everything. You want to be alone, Wednesday? Be alone.
Wednesday Addams: Goody warned that I was destined to be alone. Maybe it's inevitable. But for the first time in my life, it doesn't feel good.

Wednesday Addams: Why the sudden change of heart?
Enid Sinclair: Because we work. We shouldn't, but we do. It's like some sort of weird, friendship anomaly.
