This year in Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I've decided to feature hippies. Today explores how to be a hippie or Bohemian.
How to Be a Hippie / Bohemian
Hippies and other Bohemians are blithe spirits. They love freedom and the open road. Hippies have a great love of music and psychedelics. If you throw a craft faire, Bohemians will be there with bells on. I am Bohemian, hear me jingle!
Here are some tips on how to be a hippie.

>> I'm very curious about the bohemian home that you linked to. It should be useful for my moving project.<<
I'm happy I could help.
There are many ways to make a bohemian home. It's easier if you have a compatible building to start with -- my house is quite old -- or if you can build things, like how my dad put in a planter and a lot of bookcases. But you can do it anywhere, one piece at a time.
>> I want to write first so when it gets light I can start some other stuff things that are easier to do once the sun comes up.<<
That makes sense. This time of year, much of the daylight is devoted to yardwork.

Date: 2022-05-02 09:42 am (UTC)Only you can solve this part of the dilemma. Take some time to think about your favorite colors, or at least color families. Frex, boho has 3 main color families: airy (pale neutrals and pastels), earthy (deep neutrals and earthy colors like ochre), and psychedelic (super-saturated colors like hot pink and ultramarine). Consider what shapes and styles of furniture you enjoy.
A decor style quiz may help identify patterns in what you like:

>> because I like so much that doesn't work together <<
Happily, bohemian decor is designed to fix that problem! If you have just one or two things that don't match, it looks wrong. If you merge two sets, it can work. If everything is unique instead of coordinated, that's boho! :D
There are some tricks to unifying the chaos, so if you want that, then browse articles about boho decorating for ideas. Frex, all different chairs painted the same color, or similar chairs painted different colors, can look good. All different china dishes is another popular option. Some people like to designate a color focus in a room.
If you have wildly different tastes, then look for clusters of things that go together. You might have a different theme in different rooms. My living room is green and brown, very foresty, with a huge planter. My office is energizing sunny colors with a rag rug wall hanging.
Another option is to merge different styles. Scandinavian is very spare and colorless, easy to care for but often boring. Boho is so bright and busy that some people find it cluttered. Put the two together, you get a Scandinavian base with pops of bohemian accent colors and quirky textures that can work beautifully.
>> Very little have I picked out for myself, because I've liked it. Its mostly about being utilitarian or it's a hand-me-down.<<
That's a problem. Things you can do:
* Look at one room at a time. Sort into things that are useful, beautiful, or sentimental.
- If useful, is it still good or worn out? You probably need to replace some stuff, so make a list.
- If beautiful, keep it. You can find a way to use it.
- If sentimental, think about what you can do with it. Try to keep this category small.
* Identify things you dislike, or just don't care about.
- Can they be redecorated? Sometimes a whimsical coat of paint or some patchwork can turn a boring piece into a gem.
- Can they be repurposed? A trunk becomes an end table, a dresser becomes a coffee bar.
- Can they be sold or donated? Especially anything you sell will generate money for new things.
* Seriously take some time to look through catalogs, online stores, articles about boho decorating, anywhere you can get ideas. Focus on learning what you like first, then think about how to afford it and fit it together.
* Hit thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, etc. Most Bohemian stuff is secondhand. Buying new from stores is boho chic. The resale places are where you'll find unique and totally amazing stuff that you would never have thought to look for. I've never seen anything like my wall hanging; it's obviously related to floor rugs but doesn't look exactly like them. But do this after you have a better idea of what you like, so you can shop mindfully.
>> When I move, even if I have to do small things at a time, I want it to be finally me.<<
That is a good plan. Definitely take time to weed out stuff you don't want or need before then. If you can't afford to replace a lot of things at once, then take your time.

>> I'm looking forward to taking the quizzes. <<
Yay!
>> I think a lot of my problem is that I like a lot of things and they don't all go together.<<
Then definitely consider the style merger or separate room approaches, and browse boho decor for ideas on how to make a mishmash of things look good. There are plenty of ways to work with eclectic tastes, but you have to decide which ones you like, and that benefits from seeing a variety of options.
>> I like to blame being a Gemini for making me more than one person in the same body. :o <<
LOL yes, Aries with Libra rising here: I have strong opinions on both sides of an issue.
This has its advantages, for all it's sometimes frustrating. To use my office and living room again, one is energizing for work and the other is relaxing. If I'd thrown all that stuff into the same room, it would muddle the mood and not produce a defined effect. They're both boho, just in different ways.
Have faith in yourself. You can figure out an approach that will work for you. It'll take some self-study and probably a lot of work sorting through stuff you have just because to find things you really care about or need, but you can do it. Think of it as a journey, not a destination: every choice you make will bring you closer to a home that reflects your true self. (That's actually what Boheme is all about.) If you're not making any mistakes, you're not learning, you're coasting!

You wrote you featured hippies "this year." I'm curious, what have you featured in past years?
Thank you!

I am sitting here in a pair of tie-dyed harem pants and a "Save the Dark" T-shirt. :D
I've also written about hippie characters in various contexts.

Good idea.

Not all of them seem to be tagged accordingly, but one is the "Skin Hunger" series.
