Apr. 22nd, 2013 12:18 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This story is a sequel to "Love Is for Children," "Eggshells," "Dolls and Guys," "Turnabout Is Fair Play," and "Touching Moments," and "Splash."
Fandom: The Avengers
Characters: Phil Coulson, Bruce Banner, Hulk.
Medium: Fiction
Warnings: Inferences of past child/domestic abuse. Current environment is safe.
Summary: Phil shows Bruce the cute pictures of the team helping Hulk clean up after the bilgesnipe fight. Bruce finds the whole idea more confusing than pleasing.
Notes: Teamwork. Friendship. Flangst. Hurt/comfort. Dysfunctional relationship dynamics. Trust issues. Safety and security. ALL THE FEELS. Non-sexual touching and intimacy. Personal growth. Family of choice.
Begin with Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13.
Here ends "Coming Around." If you've been reading this story, it's helpful to leave a comment on the last episode so I have an idea how many readers it has attracted. I'm also interested in feedback on the tone and place of this story within the larger series, as it's darker and more psychological than the mostly-fluffy stuff I've written earlier. I know some folks are liking the fluff while others are hoping for more plot, so I'm trying to keep a balance. Thank you all for reading, and especially for the feedback you've given on earlier episodes.

Next up is "Birthday Girl."
"Coming Around" Part 14
"Hard to stay awake," Bruce said. He blinked, slow and lazy. His eyes took a little longer to reopen each time.
"If you're tired, you can go back to sleep," Phil said. "I'll stay and keep watch to make sure that nothing bad happens. You know you're safe here with me." Hopefully some of that reassurance would seep through to Hulk, letting him know that Phil would take care of both of them.
"Stay," Bruce said. He nodded heavily against the pillows.
Phil took that as an encouraging sign. It was much better than Bruce's usual I don't want to be a bother. Phil kneaded the back of Bruce's neck and was rewarded with a drowsy, wordless murmur. "Now, how about that story?" Phil said.
"Mmmkay," Bruce said. Sometimes, when he was sluggish like this after a transformation, he would let people take care of him without fighting it. The exhaustion left him vulnerable in a way that little else did; he lacked the energy to hold up the barriers that he usually used to keep everyone at bay. It gave Phil a narrow window of opportunity that he would use to best advantage. In time, perhaps Bruce would come to enjoy the care enough to seek it out instead of just tolerating it when someone else offered it to him.
Phil began the story, "Once there lived an old woman with her simple son. He never seemed to do anything right, and so everyone in the village called him Foolish Jack. One time, Foolish Jack worked for a farmer who gave him a coin at the end of the day. Being a very simple fellow, he had no idea what to do with it, and lost it while crossing a bridge. 'Silly boy!' cried his mother. 'You should have put it in your pocket!' "
"The next day, Foolish Jack did chores in a dairy," Phil continued. "He earned a share of the milk, which he put in his pocket just as his mother had instructed. Of course the milk spilled, leaving him with nothing once again. 'Silly boy!' cried his mother. 'You should have carried it in a pail on your head!' "
Bruce fell asleep before Phil got to the part about Foolish Jack trying to carry a donkey home on his shoulders. Phil tucked the comforter carefully around the slumbering man. Then Phil finished the story anyway, so the forlorn princess got to laugh and Foolish Jack got to marry someone with a bit of common sense.
There was something sweet and soft about the way Bruce slept. He relaxed, the way he rarely did while awake, worry-lines smoothing away. His eyelashes made dark crescents against his cheeks. Bruce clutched the pillow with one hand, his feet wound tightly into the blankets. Phil reached out to him again, cupping the side of his face gently, always gently. Bruce curled into Phil's touch without even realizing how much faith and affection it revealed.
It reminded Phil poignantly of bathtime, how Hulk had trusted Phil to wash his hair without getting soap in his eyes. For all Bruce's protestations, something was getting through to Hulk. That gave Phil hope that something could get through to Bruce too. It would be all right, sooner or later. Phil would make sure of that. He cared deeply about both of them. He would do whatever he could to help them find a better balance within their shared life.
"I know Bruce can be a handful, big guy, but he's worth it," Phil said, stroking his fingers through the rumple of dark curls. He didn't know if Hulk could hear him, but he had to try. "Just be patient with him. He'll come around."

Notes:
Bruce is still struggling with acceptance. Lack of acceptance creates conflict. Curiosity, openness, acceptance, and love are fundamental aspects of family bonding. There are ways to practice acceptance.
"Simple Jack" is a traditional fairytale about doing the right thing one step too late. It exists in many versions.
Body language in sleep reveals things that may not come clear during waking hours. People may tell lies with their bodies while awake, but not while asleep. The subconscious comes through more clearly during slumber.

>> Although it didn't have any gameplay, I still enjoyed it from start to finish, exploring depths of characters and seeing how they respond to one another.<<
This is especially good to hear. I'm hoping that fans of game night will find things to enjoy in the other stories as well.
>> Can't wait for the genius that will be Birthday Girl up next :) <<
Yay! That one does have ageplay, just over half the story.

>> I wonder if it would help Bruce to have Hulk play with the team and set up a video camera to show him that Hulk isn't the monster he thinks him to be?<<
Not quite yet, but we're getting there. Bruce is panicky about Hulk interacting with the rest of the team because it doesn't seem safe in light of Hulk's previous smashy habits. So what Bruce needs first is something else that will disprove his theory about Hulk's purely negative emotional state and consequent lack of anything approaching control.
After that, yes, records of Hulk's activities will help Bruce learn more about him and help them both share knowledge across the gap.
>> Assuming they could get Bruce to agree to that of course. <<
Yes, that's another hurdle, because Bruce is horribly camera-shy after his negative experiences with being watched.
>> Thanks for writing and the daily updates! <<
I'm glad you're enjoying this.
>>I can't wait to read the next stories.<<
First installment of "Birthday Girl" will go up in an hour or two.

>> I especially enjoy that this story has not been a romance, but a story about friends and chosen family taking care of each other in healthy ways. <<
Fanfic has romance out the wazoo for anyone who wants it. Stories about nonsexual relationships and creative problem-solving are rare. So I figured more would be good.

Date: 2013-04-23 03:05 am (UTC)There will be considerably more intimate dynamics. Once the lid comes off the can, the worms crawl out, and people have to deal with that. Good thing they've got each other.

You're welcome!
Date: 2013-04-23 07:21 am (UTC)The Avengers make an excellent group for exploring different relationship dynamics in a nonsexual context, because they have so many connections and conflicts with each other and within themselves. Add one clue-enabled person in the form of Phil and it has tremendous potential for growth.

That's very useful to hear.
>>I also love that you update everyday.<<
I'm practicing fic-writing speed, among other things. It helps that I aim to finish stories before I start posting, so you never have to worry about getting stranded. I might miss a day if the net connection goes down or I get worn out from my Poetry Fishbowl work, but usually I make it once a day.

Date: 2013-04-22 10:54 pm (UTC)As you have asked for feedback on what readers like, I would love to see more stuff with the Hulk (maybe documented by JARVIS so that Bruce can watch the whole thing and see how off base he is).
Also, I have a particular soft spot for Natka, and I love (LOVE) that SHIELD records now reflect that Natasha and Clint are siblings.
And I think I'd like to see what would happen if you toss Thor (and his baby bro) into the mix, though I can imagine that that might be a really hard story to do.

>> As you have asked for feedback on what readers like, I would love to see more stuff with the Hulk (maybe documented by JARVIS so that Bruce can watch the whole thing and see how off base he is). <<
This is a developing plot thread. Bruce has sadly valid reasons for being camera-shy, so it's going to take a while for him to adjust to the idea of technology-assisted memory sharing.
>> Also, I have a particular soft spot for Natka, and I love (LOVE) that SHIELD records now reflect that Natasha and Clint are siblings. <<
It's an important part of their relationship. There is a strong emphasis on the brother/sister dynamics in "Birthday Girl," although the story also connects Natka and Clint with other people.
>> And I think I'd like to see what would happen if you toss Thor (and his baby bro) into the mix, though I can imagine that that might be a really hard story to do. <<
If I have time to continue the series that far, then yes, I would like to bring in Thor and Loki. Such complexity!

Noted, thanks. The first episode of "Birthday Girl" just went up.
>> As for what I enjoy most, I think it's the bits where the group interacts as a whole and we get to see the multiple dynamics between characters. <<
There is a lot of that in the new story: Clint & Hulk, Hulk & Natasha, Steve & Natasha, various other combinations and Phil with pretty much everyone.

Date: 2013-04-23 09:50 pm (UTC)They needed it. Actually, I'm trying to feature all the characters, rotating among them.
>>They never seem to get enough love.<<
Story of their life, alas.
>>I love how you touched on both Hulk and Bruce's sides. Loved the whole fic!<<
I started out just with "Splash" because Hulk hadn't gotten the onstage time that everyone else had. Then I realized that, having covered Hulk's perspective, it was imperative to show Bruce's response, hence "Coming Around." They are two sides of the same coin, individual yet inseparable.
>> Bruce needs more cuddles and so does Hulk. <<
Yea, verily. It's getting better, though -- they have people around them now who understand both their skin hunger and their skittishness.
>> <3 Keep them coming. You have a loyal reader in me! <<

>> Bruce has already improved a lot, compared to how closed of he was in the beginning. <<
He really has, although he probably doesn't realize just how much. He's less self-destructive and skittish, more relaxed, and slowly learning how to interact with other people in positive ways.
>>I'm happy to know there's a new story!<<
Yep, the first episode of "Birthday Girl" is up now.

I hope that someday soon you feel comfortable enough with Thor and Loki to bring them into this emotional morass. Also looking forward to the possible return of Bucky.

That's wonderful. I'm glad I can give you something to enjoy that helps you make some personal headway. There will be more about Bruce-and-Hulk in the future; that storyline needs a lot of room to unfold.
If you haven't found it yet, I also wrote a nonfiction series on social interactions, beginning with "What Is Skin Hunger?"

You're welcome!
Date: 2013-05-19 10:30 pm (UTC)It really it. Bruce is having a miserable time coming to terms with Hulk's nature. You'll see more of this in the later stories.
>> I kinda wanted to tell Phil to back off- but I know its better for Bruce's emotional health to face the flaws in his foundation and fix them. <<
They've really given Bruce all the time and space for this that they could afford, and then some. It's getting to where, as Hulk meshes with the team, Bruce's resistance is causing problems and revealing that some of the earlier interactions weren't optimum either. So this is the point where other teammates start pushing back and insisting that Bruce deal with this stuff. They'll be as gentle as they can about this, but it's just not safe to ignore.
>> Thank you for the wonderful and well thought out story. I can't wait to read the next one! <<
Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying these so much.
