"Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal"

1513.07.10

Today I volunteered at the Art Guild booth. My license for field illustration basically connects me to the Guild enough that I can do simple stuff for them like wrapping purchased pictures for customers -- and they never have enough hands during a festival. Also, I heard that Vloroshaal signed one of our local artists for a small show at his gallery. How exciting!

Tosh dropped by and I showed him my painting and sketches of the one square-paint horse I saw at the fair a while back. He really wanted that painting, but I said no; I want to keep it. Tosh says he liked the broadsheet about me. I think it turned out a bit silly ... but I did save some copies to send to Vloroshaal, Imoshavi, and my relatives in Affamarg. I wonder if Fourth Form offers anything like "Publicity for Scientists" ...? I could use some tips on keeping an interview sensible instead of sensational.

I'm at the end of my themes for the Poetry Fishbowl. Everyone is welcome to suggest themes for upcoming sessions. Later I will list them in a LiveJournal poll and folks can vote to determine the most popular ones.  Previously used themes are listed on the landing page so you don't accidentally duplicate them.

Poetry in Microfunding:
"Faeder Way" follows the antics of human explorers as they try to understand some aliens with an unusual sex/gender structure.  "Uncounted Colors of the Stars" belongs to the series An Army of One.  A freetrader with an atypical identity grows interested in the culture of the Lacuna.  "Not the Absence of Fear" belongs to the series Polychrome Heroics.  Clement deals with the aftermath of the fight scene.

Torn World writing update:
Currently posting: "Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal" (fiction).  Approved as canon: "Unicorns on Parade" "Spruce Deer" "Wandering the Heights" "Indoor Men and Outdoor Men" "From White to Blue," "Stalking Sleep" (poetry), "Sharing a Round" (fiction).  Back to me for edits: "Cutting Cords and Clasping Hands (Parts 1-4)," "Winterheart" (parts 2-3), "Stinging Like Nettles"  "Off the Clock" (poetry).  Currently in front of the canon board:  "Ghost Bat" (nonfiction). ... from some folks who know how to live it.

The main reason I'm not wholly satisfied with my life is that what I do isn't valued enough to provide security for my family.  But I would rather deal with survival insecurity than a soul-destroying job.  My work?  That, I'm thrilled with.  And even though I'm not making enough to live securely  I have definitely disproven the claim that "there is no money in poetry."  It usually pays the regular monthly bills.  In today's culture that is an impossible accomplishment.  I did it largely by ignoring the claims that nobody likes poetry anymore.

Sometimes you CAN edit reality.

Who owns science fiction?  We all do.  Everyone gets to write, buy, and read whatever they want.  You can show people your dreams, or your nightmares, or both.  This is how we think about what could destroy the Earth, or save it.  Tell ALL the stories!
