Today is mostly sunny, quite warm, and howling wind. 0_o It is 83°F in fucking March.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of assorted blackbirds, a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, two mourning doves, two starlings, and a tufted titmouse.

I put out water for the birds.

We went shopping and bought some gardening supplies.

EDIT 3/28/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/28/25 -- I gathered the ingredients for my terrarium substrate mix.  Most of them are sitting in a bucket waiting to be mixed.  The sphagnum moss is in a cup full of water because it needs to rehydrate first.  I took pictures of the ingredients.

It occurs to me that I should look for some large buckets with lids.  Rural King probably has lids for their 5-gallon buckets.  That would give me a place to store things outdoors securely, which are useful to have but not needed all the time, like sand.

As it is almost suppertime, I am done working outdoors for the night.

Substance abuse often follows homelessness, not precedes it — new study finds

According to a recent poll from the National Alliance to End Homelessness, 57% of Americans believe that alcoholism and drug addiction directly lead to people losing their housing.

It is true that substance misuse -- and problematic use of substances as prescribed -- can lead to homelessness, because it impairs ability to hold a job and perform other social behaviors that America demands of people. Anyone who can't keep up is abandoned.

In fact, 42% of unhoused Californians reported that they began to use regularly only after they experienced homelessness for the first time.

It's hardly a surprise that people in a miserable condition will seek to relieve their suffering by any means available.
