Part 3: Benefits of Fanifestos

Fanifestos provide many benefits. They have been part of fandom for a long time. This depth of history helps shape not only fanifestos but also fans and fandom itself. Let's take a look at some of the advantages to creating and sharing fanifestos.

* They inspire people to write more of them. This is essential for perpetuating this genre of meta. It's especially important now, when fewer people write fanifestos. We need new manifestos to help revive the practice and thus reap its benefits.

* They collate lists of key concepts and fanworks. It helps transmit these through the fandom as it grows. In canons with a lot of esoteric vocabulary, it helps newcomers to understand what is going on sooner. It also directs attention to some of the best and most iconic fanworks, thus rewarding those creators for making something so special.

* Fanifestos encourage fans to organize their thoughts. Some fans just adore finding and sorting trivia about their favorite canons. Others love to analyze what's going on in a canon and why. This type of meta helps people "think out loud" and refine their own ideas.

* They create cohesive clusters of fandom within a canon. For example, asexuality appears much more often in Sherlock than in most other fandoms. A particular alternate universe may also gain traction this way, like the big list of different ones for The Magnificent Seven.

* They help people discover new canons and fandoms to love. Sometimes it's hard to find new things that you will really like, especially given the signal to noise issues in the entertainment industry today. So fanifestos can create a kind of menu where you can skim titles and then read for more details, searching for your particular interests. A good list of fanifestos is an unparalleled resource when you are bored or stuck indoors for a long time.

* Similarly, they attract new fans to a canon or other topic. From the perspective of current fans, this is a vital method of expanding their fandom. It's especially important for small or obscure fandoms that aren't easy for people to stumble across by chance.

* Fanifestos help fans to learn more about a favored canon, characters, or other topic. They predate wikis and other online references; people used to print these things in fanzines or on flyers to hang at conventions. Even now, they offer a more condensed and targeted introduction compared to a wiki whose size may intimiate newcomers.

* They inspire new fanworks. Any fanifesto can do this just by describing parts of the canon or discussing interpretations. However, some take it farther and include a "what if?" section, a list of popular fixits, a discussion of all the possible partners for a fandom bicycle, a set of prompts, or other material specifically designed to encourage creators to make new stuff.

* They may document the history of a canon and its fandom. This happens most offen with canons that grow to include multiple books or television series, different media, and other complexities. Over time, fanworks build up, creators become famous in the fandom, the canon introduces ideas or relationships that weren't in the opening content, and so on. It's good to look back at where you've come from, because it helps you think about where you're going. It even helps academics who like to study fandom.
