Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 13: Repairing
Repairing comprises a huge range of skills for maintaining and fixing tools, toys, and anything else that needs care. Most folks think of this regarding big machines like cars, but it used to be the case that small things were designed for repair too, like sewing machines or mixers. Nowadays, much is meant to be disposable, which wastes resources. Repairs may be divided into large equipment, small equipment, toys, and clothes among other categories. Different cultures have different things to repair and methods they like to use. Some of these are distinctive, like Japanese kintsugi (repairing pottery with golden seams) or boro (repairing clothes, often reinforced with sashiko stitches). After harnessing fire, people learned that it hardened wood, so that became the preferred method for point maintenance and repair on digging sticks. These are, in fact, still used by foragers today!
Repairs can be simple and easy, like sewing on a button; or complex and challenging, like installing a new faucet on a sink. The more moving parts, the more complicated it gets. Most people can learn to do some basic repairs that will save them money. Some people have a knack for considerably more. It is well worth your while to explore what you're good at fixing, or not. I do well at repairing clothes, but I am the one writer on the planet who has been told not to be a plumber. At length. For cause.
Even if you can't fix something yourself, knowing about repair can help you choose better products or explain to a professional repairman about what is broken. For new products, you likely need new books; but a lot of the older repair guides for things like clothes or houses are better than later ones. For an overview, watch for books on homesteading, upcycling, or visible mending too.
