This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about reading as a way of becoming an expert in a given subject. Read Part 1: Introduction to Becoming an Expert, Part 2: Architecture, Part 3: Dance.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 4: Music

Music is a performing art based on patterned sounds. It includes both musical instruments and singing, together or separately. All known human cultures make music, so that creates tremendous variety. Here on Dreamwidth, check out [community profile] beautifulmechanical, [community profile] onesongaday and [community profile] tfc_musicianships.

Music reaches back a long time. The oldest probable musical instrument is a flute made from cave bear bone dating to around 50,000-60,000 years ago, likely created by Neanderthal people. Some instruments span many cultures, while others are unique to one. Some change over time; modern Boomwhackers descend from the stick-clashing movies of Morris dancing.

Learning to sing or play an instrument can take a long time to do well. Some instruments are harder to learn than others. Percussion features many of the easiest. Most folks can learn to play a simple rhythm on a drum, but there are also fun things like croakers -- a hollow wooden frog with a ridged back that you rub with a stick to make sounds. Music also makes a fun hobby, as most people enjoy listening to it. You can find music performances at many college theatres, or classes at most community centers. Understanding more about how music works can make it a lot easier to do, or more fun when listening.

You have many options for selecting three books about music. Chronology is a good bet for musical periods within a culture. You could explore famous musicians or singers. Study different cultures or types of music. Look into individual instruments or families of instruments. While you may find some musical materials at a used book store or library, a dedicated music store will have much more. Here are some possibilities...
