Part 7: Where to Find Fanifestos

Fanifestos are scattered far and wide throughout fandom. This can make them somewhat challenging to find. However, there are some places where they tend to cluster. Start looking in those places and you should find some. Also, most online venues have some sort of search function and organization to help people find things. Knowing common options for those will improve your chances as well.

* Meta archives. There are places that gather meta, including dedicated sites, fan collections, blog communities, and so on. Finding these can bring access to many fanifestos at once. On Dreamwidth, see the list of meta communities.

* Hub sites. Some venues gather as much fanwork as possible, from diverse canons, which may include meta. Rules vary, so check to see if a given hub does accept it. These often have a good database to let you search for or exclude things based on your interests.

* Fansites. These may collect materials for a specific canon or the works of one creator. They may or may not have a search function; some just organize content with a menu. If they have meta, though, it is often filed together under "Meta" or a similar term.

* Wikis. Some are more general, while others focus on a genre or even a specific canon. They often amass lots of meta about a canon, and sometimes that takes the form of fanifestos. Canon wikis sometimes have a section for ship manifestos in particular.

* Internet archives. These typically allow people to save anything, and thus need a search function to sort through the resulting hoard of materials. In addition to searching for fanifestos, archives also offer places to store them so they don't get lost. Find some archive(s) that you like, and contribute to them.

* Events. Various events in fandom encourage the creation, sharing, and archiving of meta including fanifestos. [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge and [community profile] month_of_meta (May) are two examples on Dreamwidth of dedicated meta events. However, other events may also inspire meta. [community profile] snowflake_challenge often has a challenge for promoting your favorite canon, character, ship, or whatever. Three Weeks for Dreamwidth (April 25-May 15) is another time when more folks post meta.

Here are some places to browse manifestos...

1000 Manifesto List
This is a huge collection of manifestos. Only some are fannish, but it's a great resource for exploring the wide range of what manifestos can be.

[community profile] blueheronteanook
Fanfiction and meta for the Otherverse web serials Pact, Pale, Pate, and Poke by Wildbow.

Fanlore
Here is one of the biggest wikis in fandom, which includes a huge amount of meta and factual information about canons, fandom, fans, and related topics. Some fanifestos are included, while others are linked as references. It's also one of the best resources for writing fanifestos as it offers glossary pages that you can link to in your work.

[community profile] notfic
This is a place for posting essays and meta on any and all aspects of fandom. Think of it as a multifandom nonfiction community.

[community profile] shes_awesome
This is a community dedicated to awesome women everywhere, though primarily on television and in the movies. Just about anything pertaining to awesome women is welcome here be it fic, icons, fanart, fanmixes, picspams, meta, CAPSLOCK SQUEE!!!, angry rants, fuck you she's awesome lists, and anything else you can think of. As long as it's about awesome women, you're good to go.

[community profile] shipmanifestos
What is a ship manifesto? It is a formatted style of meta that provides insight as to why someone might like a pairing, or why they believe others might like a pairing. Think of it as something like a case file. Both canon and fanon evidence as to why this ship has sailed.
See the formatting guide.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge
Among the busiest events in Dreamwidth, it encourages people to talk about fandom, so it tends to include some meta.

[community profile] tv_talk
TV Talk is for both discussing TV and meeting other fans interested in your shows. We encourage readers to post reviews, recaps, meta, primers or other content related to TV shows they are watching.
