I stumbled across some other issues with electric vehicles in an article that's actually about vehicle size...

The Stakes in the SUV “Arms Race” Go Way Beyond Safety

There’s been talk of the vehicle size “arms race” for at least 20 years, and the data is very clear on the impact that ever-bigger vehicles have on safety: they might be safer for the people inside the vehicle, but they are much more dangerous for everyone outside them, including those in smaller vehicles and folks walking and biking.

Folks have mentioned an interest in questions and conversations that make them think. So I've decided to offer more of those. This batch features hobbies.

Tissue paper crafts use a thin, transparent paper which can be put over flat objects or crumpled into shapes. There are versions for children and adults.

I've pointed out before that nagging doesn't work, modeling does. Another way to change people's behavior is to change their environment, in which case they will naturally shift to suit it.

To Change the Behavior, Change the Environment: Lessons From the Blue Zones

Here’s the main idea of the Blue Zones: they’re a handful of regions from various parts of the world where people have significantly higher-than-average life expectancies. Building on gerontology studies, National Geographic Fellow and journalist Dan Buettner and a team of researchers pinpointed these longevity hotspots. After spending time and learning from elders in the Blue Zones, Buettner and his team identified nine common denominators that contribute to longer and happier lives, which fall into four key themes: related to natural movement, wise eating, connection, and outlook.

Today is cloudy and mild.  It rained last night!  \o/  It drizzled off and on early in the day.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen any though.  The hopper feeder was almost empty and the new thistle feeder had been eaten from too.  :D

EDIT 10/31/24 -- I put out more birdseed.  I hung up a new corncob.  I've seen a flock of birds flying away as I approached.  I've heard a tufted titmouse but haven't seen it.

I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 10/31/24 -- I put out water for the birds.

I did a bit of work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Here is a look at how people deliberately created the current housing crisis by systematically banning so many forms of housing that they shut out many people from having even a rented roof over their head.  I have no sympathy when society creates a problem for itself.  Sympathy for the victims, sure, but not society as a whole.

In order to revitalize a place, you need to think about what people can see, and that's a surprisingly small area. Focus around public transportation hubs and use them to grow lively street scenes. Consider pop-ups, things like a farmer's market or food truck that can be deployed quickly to activate a space and turn it into a place.

The cool thing about working on this human scale, very short in range, is that it naturally suits incremental growth. Put out a park bench, a garbage can, and a planter full of flowers. Find some sort of food/beverage vendor, and if I was doing it, I would find the most fragrant food truck or cart and hustle them to park there. If there are blank walls, consider murals. If there are weird patches of grass, turn them into native plant gardens, which require little or no maintenance once established. If there are few or no trees, plant some -- oaks attract wildlife, but grow slowly, so mix in something that'll produce shade sooner, like maples. If there is a vacant lot or unused parking lot, turn it into event space like for a drum jam or mini-street-fair. Establish a busk spot or two, perhaps with a little wooden platform stage if you have a nice alcove. Is there good bike parking? If not, add some. 1 car parking space = 10 bike parking spaces. Next, look at the nearest 2-5 buildings: the ones on each side of your starting point, the one across the street, and maybe also the neighbors of that one across the street. Are they full? Make sure they have street-facing windows with attractive displays. Are they vacant? Renovate if necessary to get businesses in there, things that will pull people in. A restaurant, coffeehouse, gift shop, gallery of local arts and crafts, beauty salon, bookstore, or clothing store would be good. Once you've got the core of an active place, you can gradually extent it outward by line of sight.

Finally, think about where people want to go, and especially where they want to walk. Start at any transit stop and think about where it connects. Are those places people like to walk? If so, you're in good shape. If not, use the above steps to make them more attractive to pedestrians.

Revisit those who have passed during the year. These entries from my "Moment of Silence" tag highlight those who have died recently. Some of my posts have a "Carry on the Work" section regarding the person's accomplishments in case anyone else wants to explore those.
