This poem came out of the June 3, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by
janetmiles. It also fills the "activism" square in my 6-2-25 card for the Pride Fest Bingo. This poem belongs to the series Monster House.
"The Result of Your Own Bad Behavior"
Everyone knows that
the bogeyman comes
for the bad boys and girls.
What they don't realize is
that the bogeyman is created
by your own guilty conscience,
that the bogeyman is the result
of your own bad behavior.
If you see that side of him,
then you get only and
exactly what you deserve.
There are so many bad ones
who see the bogeyman, but
none of them really know him.
People don't understand,
either, that the bogeyman
is not scary to everyone.
After the bogeyman has
dealt with the bad people,
then he turns to take care
of the good boys and girls
who have been the victims.
He never hesitates to sit on
the closet floor or get down
on his hands and knees
to fold his long frame
underneath the bed.
The bogeyman
understands fear:
it is his domain.
He pulls it out of
them like dark wool,
winds it on his claws
to save for later.
He picks them up
and lets them play
with his long pale hair
and sings them lullabies.
Then he carries them to safety.

Date: 2025-06-07 11:31 pm (UTC)This is a narrative poem, meaning it tells a story; and it's written in free verse, which means it has no regular rhyme or meter but relies on other poetic techniques such as imagery and alliteration. It does have prosody -- it sounds different from prose. A majority of my poetry at this stage is narrative free verse like this. If you want more, check out the Monster House series on the Serial Poetry page.
I do also enjoy form poems, wordplay poems, and other styles. Of those, I most often get prompts for haiku and have oopsed a book several times doing that.

Date: 2025-06-07 11:37 pm (UTC)I have a question: Do I make an introduction post over into crowdfunding? Or is that only where you can write? Just wondering. If so, I'll probably set up a request and commissions post at my personal writing community.

Date: 2025-06-08 12:35 am (UTC)Yay! The weekend is a good time. There is a lot of material already posted, and people describe my work as "flypaper for eyeballs."
>> I love writing poems but I'm not confident in writing them. It's been a long time since I've written a poem. lol <<
Writing poetry is not as difficult as some people make it out to be. Some forms are quite easy. I have some instructions on my author site:

You can make an introduction post there. There is a tag for Introductions. If you're not sure what to include, see the questionnaire from Three Weeks for Dreamwidth. You can also post about crowdfunding events that you are hosting or participating in.
There's a monthly post that asks what people are doing, where you can also mention your projects. The Crowdfunding Creative Jam is the third weekend of each month, when anyone can post prompts or make stuff based on the current theme. Next up is June 14-15 with a theme of "Good vs. Bad." Drop by, grab some prompts, and try your hand at writing poetry!

Date: 2025-06-08 06:09 am (UTC)Ballad is one of the easier forms. I often use it when I want something lyrical. "A Walking Song" is a recent example.

Thank you!
