Seven Neighborhoods in Detroit: Recipes from the City by J N Cameron
We picked this cookbook because my partner Doug grew up in Detroit (the inner city, not a suburb). The featured neighborhoods are Little Italy, Hamtramck, Chinatown, Paradise Valley, Dearborn, Greektown, and Mexicantown. The recipes are organized per neighborhood rather than by type of dish.
This cookbook had one of the highest hit rates for marking recipes we'd like to make, probably the highest since
The Elder Scrolls Cookbook. Little Italy examples included Antipasto Salad, Baked Mastaccioli, and Crusty Italian Bread. Hamtramck offered Potato Pancakes, Beer Braised Kielbasa and Kraut, City Chicken, and Paczki. Chinatown had Almond Boneless Chicken, Woo Dip Harr, and Up North Pasties. Paradise Valley featured Collard Greens, Boogaloo Pork Sandwich, and Old Fashioned Banana Pudding. Dearborn provided Grilled Kafta Kabobs and Ashta Fruit Cocktail. Greektown brought Gyros and Coney Dogs. Mexicantown didn't have any marked. Most of these are practical, everyday recipes that don't require a lot of fuss, special equipment, or hard-to-find ingredients. There are a few fancier feast foods, though.
Seven Neighborhoods in Detroit is ideal for anyone from Detroit in particular or Michigan in general. It's also a good choice if you like to tour America's ethnic cuisine, or you want everyday recipes that are still interesting. Highly recommended.
