Statistical analysis shows that queer orientations are heavily represented among people involved in slash (same-sex) fanworks.  I'm not surprised.  I also hypothesize that fanfic has helped the gay rights movement by making literature in which queer behavior is not unthinkable, but rather adorable.  People get used to it, and that's progress.  Similarly original material featuring queer relationships is helpful, and I suspect that again a lot of folks into original queer lit are themselves some flavor of queer -- plus some straight allies who may be heterosexual but bi-reading-romantic.

The January 2014 Muse Fusion is now open in [livejournal.com profile] torn_world.  Come give us prompts, or claim prompts to make stuff.  We're particularly interested in food or sea monsters, but other things are welcome too.

What I Have Written

"Rainforest Delicacies" -- today's freebie, a poem about fruit.

"Beach Pictures" -- 42 lines, $20
From your installation prompt, I got the poem "Beach Pictures," which is written in unrhymed tercets. It's about an artist/construction worker who makes mosaics for holiday cottages in Duurludirj territory.

"Tangleweed" -- 60 lines, $20
The science prompt inspired a free-verse poem, "Tangleweed." Warsailors and saltwater biologists cooperate to investigate a new kind of sea monster.

There is also an unfinished article about tangleweed, currently at 667 words.

"Sugarballs and Storytelling" -- 1,670 words, $33.40 or 34 credits
From the sticky prompt I got the story "Sugarballs and Storytelling." Bai and Rai enjoy a street faire with their family, have fun with play licenses, and try different sweets.

"Snowbloom" -- 35 lines, $15
Your last prompt became the title of a free-verse poem, "Snowbloom." There are edible algae that form in snow under rare conditions in the North.

There is also an article about snowbloom, currently at 1,170 words.

"New This Tenend: Squiggle Mice" -- 18 lines
The Crazy Critters prompt inspired "New This Tenend: Squiggle Mice." This is the text of a flyer that would appear on the door of a pet store to advertise a shipment for sale.

I'm not pricing this yet. First, I'm trying to think of what I could do with it as a perk to encourage people to promote my serial "Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal." Second, I think it would work best if done up as an image rather than just text, maybe with a handwriting or brush font, and an illustration of a Squiggle Mouse.

Is anyone interested in teaming up for the art? A simple ink drawing would be fine, although color is certainly welcome. Let me know if you're interested and we can talk details.

"Southern Breads" -- 741 words
After reading what [livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion wrote about Mrruna softbread, I worked up a few more examples: Mayaloi Heartbread, Roluman Seedcakes, Slunai Steam Dumplings, and Yasiluu Wheatberry Dumplings.  This material will probably get rolled into her article already in progress.

From My Prompts

by [livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion
Your 'fermented or otherwise cultured...' prompt has spawned an article on Northern Foods, which mentions some of the cheese, yogurts and drinks made from snowy milk, as well as the wild yeast cultures that are used in breads. At about 600 words, it is still in progress, but I hope it will be a useful resource!

This is the freebie for the January 2014 Muse Fusion over in [livejournal.com profile] torn_world.  It was prompted by [livejournal.com profile] sibylle.  It also fills the "Vacations and Holidays" square in my 12-8-13 card for the Genprompt Bingo fest.

So now apparently my brain speaks Portuguese. I've never studied it. I took one year of Spanish in high school plus a smattering of other exposure. For some reason, the Spanish in my brain just kept growing, forever. I've always been able to parse a bit of Portuguese because it's close to Spanish and it's an Indo-European language. Okay, fine. But today I saw this:

"Mão de Deus"
astropt.org
Para mim, esta é uma das mais bonitas fotos de sempre tiradas a uma secção do Universo. Normalmente, a imagem aparece com uma "mão azul", sendo uma foto tirada em raios-X de baixa energia pelo Observatório Espacial Chandra,

... and I thought, "Hmm, something of God," and then I remembered that the tilde marks nasal vowels in Portuguese, so that's "mano," which is hand. Hand of God. Cool. Looking at the rest of the piece, I hacked out:

"Hand of God"
astropt.org
For mim, is a uma das very beautiful pictures sempre taken a uma secção of the Universe. Normally, a picture appears with uma "blue hand", sendo uma picture taken in X-rays of baixa energy pelo Special Observatory Chandra,

This is what I found with an online translator:

' God's hand '
astropt.org
For me, this is one of the prettiest photos when of they were always taken away from a section of the Universe. Normally, the image appears with a ' blue hand ', being a photo taken away in X-rays of low energy by the Space Observatory Chandra,

Not perfect, but very close.  Basically I got the whole gist of those lines: 27 to 14, about 2/3 of the content, with only one solid miss (special/space).  That's better than would reasonably have been expected sight-reading a random news article in a language that has actually been studied for a year.  I was nowhere near that good in high school, even in Mexico where I managed quite a bit better than the other students.  This is a later development.

I don't know why or how my brain does this.  Russian and Japanese have grown only a little post-classes.  I have less affinity for them.  Everything else is catch-as-catch-can.  But Spanish ... in my head, it's a field of marigolds, and it has gone on to do amazing things in there with no more attention than occasionally reading things in Spanish when I see them.  And now Portuguese.  I suspect it might happen again if I  had a chance to study a language I felt a strong affinity for; Gaelic would probably stick like glue, the way I pick it up out of name dictionaries and whatnot.

Oh wait, I was just looking at Proto-Indo-European roots for The Blueshift Troupers  last week.  Maybe that contributed too.  Now that's a language I would love to have a class in, or even just a good guidebook.

The following poems from the January 7, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl are currently available. Poems may be sponsored via PayPal -- there's a permanent donation button on my LiveJournal profile page -- or you can write to me and discuss other methods.

There are still some verses left in the linkback poem, "Her Crystalline Voice." You can reveal those by linking to this page
.

"A Bad Day in Bed" -- 23 lines, $10 SOLD
I used several of your quotes in the free-verse poem "A Bad Day in Bed."  So many things can go wrong with kink!

"The Daughters of Janus" -- 96 lines, $48
A Dreamwidth prompt about all-knowing vs. all-powerful inspired the epic ballad "The Daughters of Janus." Two daughters contend for the right to become queen after their father.

"Soldier Boy" -- 71 lines, $35.50
Your prompt about Ercole led to the free-verse poem "Soldier Boy."  Sometimes toys bring up sad memories.

"Spirit of Truth" -- 85 lines, $42.50
Based on your prompt about plans and consequences, I wrote the free-verse poem "Spirit of Truth."  Glenta sends Shaeth and Trobby to collect herbs.  They decide to make a batch of sun wine while they're out.  This does not go quite as planned ...

"Thar She Blows" -- 42 lines, $20
I couldn't resist the exploding whale.  The free-verse poem "Thar She Blows" is basically what it says on the tin.

"Worse Than the Disease" -- 74 lines, $37
A backchannel prompt inspired the free-verse poem "Worse Than the Disease."  Sheila asks the Sculptress to restore her vision; it works, but with unexpected consequences.
