Three Weeks for Dreamwidth: Linguistics
May. 12th, 2026 02:28 amThis year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about reading as a way of becoming an expert in a given subject. Read Part 1: Introduction to Becoming an Expert, Part 2: Architecture, Part 3: Dance, Part 4: Music, Part 5: Painting, Part 6: Poetry, Part 7: Sculpture, Part 8: Conflict Resolution, Part 9: Cooking, Part 10: Coping Skills, Part 11: Gardening, Part 12: Relationship Skills, Part 13: Repairing, Part 14: Survival Skills, Part 15: Archaeology, Part 16: Biology, Part 17: Chemistry.
Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 18: Linguistics
Linguistics is the science of studying language, with related branches into neuroscience (how the brain processes language), anthropology (language as a medium of culture), literature (storytelling), and so forth. Aspects include famous people, historical linguistics, language acquisition, language revitalization, psycholinguistics, and others. Xenolinguistics is the study of alien and/or invented languages. The fascinating thing about linguistics is that we don't know how far back language goes! We can glean a few clues from the evolution of brains, jaws, vocal organs, etc. as shown in the fossil record. But until writing appears, we have no hard evidence, just the observation that it'd be really hard to organize as much as people did without complex communication. That only goes back about to the Bronze Age. Historical linguistics can estimate how old languages are, track their relations, and suggest when they diverged. So for instance, Proto-Indo-European also goes back to around 4500 BCE, just a little earlier than the first hints of writing. Modern linguistics didn't even start until the 18th century. But there were definitely people studying language before then: the traders and other far travelers. Not only do you encounter more different languages that way, you have to start looking for ways to speed up your learning so you can avoid getting shot at. The more you understand about how language works, the easier it is to grasp your own and learn new ones. That's a big advantage in today's diverse world.
Linguistics begins with a lot of fun things that anyone can enjoy learning about language, like rhymes and why they help us remember things, or puns based on words that sound the same or similar but have different meanings. Of course, the biggest linguistic hobby is constructed languages, which is pretty hardcore. The science goes all the way up to really obscure stuff like figuring out exactly how distantly related languages are connected to each other. Finding language guides is easy, finding books in foreign languages a little harder, but technical books on linguistics are less common. Libraries should have some, and used bookstore might have textbooks, but your best bet will be a university library. Similarly language classes are easy to find, but anything on linguistic science is usually at a college.
Choosing three books about linguistics gives you a few different options. Overview and two details is a good choice, as is beginning-intermediate-advanced. If you already know a foreign language, you can dig into its linguistics. So regional is another good option. If it's the mechanics you like, you could pick three different parts like grammar, morphology, and semantics. You could also look up famous linguistics or language activists. Here are some possibilities...

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 18: Linguistics
