These are content notes for "From the Ashes a Fire Shall Be Woken."

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."

Fibercrafts include everything made with plant, animal, and/or synthetic fibers. Common examples include crocheting, knitting, felting, weaving, sewing, embroidery, and macramé. More challenging ones include things like hand-spinning, dyeing, silk painting, batik, tatting, and bobbin lace.

Crochet has plenty of tutorials from All Free Crochet or Wikihow Crochet. Browse some free crochet patterns.

Granny square is a type of crochet that makes blocks which fit together to create things such as a blanket or a sweater. Most are indeed square, but there are also hexagons and other shapes. With these basic shapes, you can make pretty much anything you want. Here are some free patterns for basic granny squares. Some are textured. Flowers in particular are often raised and sometimes quite elaborate. You can mix and match different patterns to make a patchwork effect. It's one of the most iconic examples of afghan art and hippie fashion.

Hyperbolic crochet uses surprisingly simple crochet methods to illustrate advanced mathematical and geometric concepts. Here's how to make a pseudosphere. See some patterns for crocheting corals.

Knitting has many tutorials on All Free Knitting or Wikihow Knitting. Browse some free knitting patterns.

Cableknit is a type of knitting that looks like cords wrapped around each other. Here are patterns for 5-strand and 4-6 strand cableknit. Browse more cableknit patterns.

Needlework is a catchall term for decorative sewing and embroidery. Examples include appliqué, needlepoint, patchwork quilting, and tapestry.

Tatting uses a shuttle to make knots and loops in thread to create lace. The concepts are simple, but the designs are intricate.

Bobbin lace involves winding fine thread onto wooden sticks, then moving them over and under each other to create patterns. The lace in progress is pinned to a pillow, so it's sometimes called pillow lace. Browse some free bobbin lace patterns.

Foster care necessarily disrupts attachments that formed prior to separation. This often, though not always, causes attachment issues. What is often described as an attachment disorder is more precisely connection disruption. This may be the abrupt severance of positive connections (as in separating Shiv from the Atwoods) or lack of connection because people have been unavailable or neglectful (which also happened to Shiv from birth through multiple placements). Such disruptions of contact cause many problems, particularly in foster care. The attendant loss and grief can make recovery difficult. Shiv's history of neglect, separation, and assorted abuse makes it harder for him to connect with anyone now. His positive family ties should make it possible to reconnect, because at least he has some sense that such things exist and can be worthwhile. He feels affection for Arthur but struggles to grasp it. Consider a spectrum from secure attachment through insecure but organized forms of attachment, disorganized attachment, secure base distortions, disordered attachment, and finally non-attachment disorders at the far end. Shiv's attachment is severely damaged but still slightly active. There are tips for parents of foster or adopted children about healing disrupted attachment and other types of trauma.

Traumatic stress can cause a spectrum of effects ranging from acute stress reaction (a normal response that fades after a few days) through acute stress disorder (a "stuck" crisis state that lasts up to a month), PTSD (a "stuck" crisis state lasting more than one month), to PDSD (a "stuck" crisis state involving repeated traumatic experiences over time). Shiv has PDSD out the wazoo. When the abuse begins very early in life, as in Shiv's case, Developmental Trauma Disorder may occur as it disrupts personal growth. This spectrum of conditions is fundamentally a failure of processing that happens inside the brain. When the mind cannot file traumatic memories properly, then they don't integrate into experience, which disrupts the ability to recognize context. The events get "stuck" in a processing loop within the mind, which turns those memories into triggers that cause flashbacks. Hence Shiv's tendency to regress in some situations, or forget that he now has adult resources; education is a major trigger for him. Some new therapies focus on the body as a way to "unstick" those memories and thus heal the mind. It also helps to learn ways of coping with flashbacks or helping someone else through them.

Educational neglect involves not just keeping a child out of school but also failing to provide lessons they can actually learn. Although it's technically illegal in some local-American states, the latter version happens routinely; many children are caged in schools that present stock materials which are unsuited to many students, who are then blamed for "not trying." This brings us to educational abuse, which includes such issues as teachers who bully, unfair judgment, and cruel punishments. Shiv's experiences with educational neglect and abuse make him extremely skittish of classes nowadays, even in subjects he likes. He's still tempted by Arthur's suggestions, but he's convinced it will all go horribly wrong somehow.

Many students find college intimidating for a variety of reasons. There are tips for decision-making after high school and for coping with fear of college.
