Magical Native American is a common trope or stereotype. It has substantial basis in cultural aspects, but stereotype form these are not handled responsibly. In this case, it is averted by placing the copper-skinned character race in a more urban and technological society compared to the others.
Magical Negro has similar problems, although the students have not specified a solution other than wanting to avoid it.
Representation is important in literature with a need for stories by and about diverse people. One way to accomplish this in a group project is to use the group members themselves as inspiration for characters, plots, settings, cultures, and so on.
Olive skin, common in the Mediterranean region, is sun-resistant with undertones of green, gold, or bronze. However, its intensity ranges from rather dark to pretty light. Some countries like Spain and Italy have a distinct shift from darker tones in the south to lighter tones in the north.
Fungi have thousands of sexes.
Homo sapiens carry DNA from at least three other species: Neatherthals, Denisovans, and one we don't even know. Most of the time, different species cannot breed together, or produce offspring that are usually or always infertile. However, some species can crossbreed effectively.
Among northeastern tree species, natural shoot grafting is known to occur in sugar maple, black cherry, red and white oak, sycamore, willows, beech, eastern hemlock, and white pine (as pictured).
On Earth, darker skin tones developed near the equator and paler skin tones farther toward the poles. Miráhan likely began the same way, but over time the populations moved around. Now the lightest people (the Islanders) live in equatorial territory, and the copper-skinned people (the Roadwrights) live much farther north. Black and tawny skin tones occur in between those extremes.
Island dwarfism occurs when a large species colonizes an island and gradually gets smaller in size.
The Rosetta Stone is a famous artifact with the same text in several languages.
