Thank you for your link to the story of her gearhead, crack mechanic, and demon driver.

Her loss creates a seismic shift for Britain and the Commonwealth, and in my life; she had already been on the throne three years when I was born.

The British monarchy must face change, and rigorous debate about what form that change must take. But for now, I mourn a woman who, to the best of her understanding and ability, served her country and its people.

I think the biggest problem they had was idleness. The populace didn't want monarchs really ruling anymore, but wouldn't give them another serious job to do and wouldn't let go of them either.

I agree, and I appreciate your mention of that problem; few people that I've read have talked about it.

But in the afterlife, I think she'll go back to being an ambulance driver. There just aren't many folks who can handle jobs like collecting souls from a battlefield, and I think she's cool enough to be good at that.

I like that idea.

If reincarnation's an option and the choice is left to her...yeah, I'd hope for her to go back to being an ambulance driver. Or a paramedic, maybe.

Her life was extraordinary. She and her baby sister stayed in London during the Blitz when so many people sent their children to the countryside. I always thought it was cool that she was a driver and a mechanic.

While I'm sure it accorded with her interests, I suspect there was a strong PR motive for her joining the ATS rather than any other branch of service, because it had a particularly bad reputation (on fairly urban mythical grounds) for being sexually immoral, with, allegedly, fathers going to recruiting offices and saying they were not having their daughters called up to the ATS, anything but that. So Princess Lilibet joining up in that particular service sent a Very Strong Message about its impeccable acceptability.

I remember, with much glee, the headlines when she horrified the Saudi king by driving. :)

I strongly prefer your memorial to the tasteless "Ding dong the witch is dead" and other celebrations that the locals around here are having.

Let Britain have a moment of silence. She was a cultural and political icon.

>> Wow, that is harsh. <<

Yeah. Lost a baseline level of respect for a lot of people.

>> I doubt few people could have done ... less worse with that hand. <<

Especially now, when it's so easy to dogpile for small things. She had a long life and wasn't that hated. Most of the people who were saying that were angry at the British Empire in general and taking it out on her specifically. Humans can be nasty.

>> And people are liable to miss the stabilizing influence she had, because the younger generations? Do not have her grace and fortitude. <<

They certainly do not. May they learn from her loss.

She had a lot of grit to live that long through the events she did, and still come out of it okay.
