Moment of Silence: Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth has passed away. So dies "the last person who knew how to behave in public."
I'd like to share an aspect of her history that's often overlooked: she was a gearhead, a crack mechanic, and a demon ambulance driver. While many monarchs have been warriors, I suspect she probably saved the most lives.

Date: 2022-09-08 09:07 pm (UTC)Her loss creates a seismic shift for Britain and the Commonwealth, and in my life; she had already been on the throne three years when I was born.
The British monarchy must face change, and rigorous debate about what form that change must take. But for now, I mourn a woman who, to the best of her understanding and ability, served her country and its people.

>> Her loss creates a seismic shift for Britain and the Commonwealth,<<
Agreed. And whether they like it or not, across the rest of Europe too.
>> and in my life; she had already been on the throne three years when I was born.<<
Yeah, same here; she was a constant, and one of the few figures in politics who was mostly respectable.
>> The British monarchy must face change, and rigorous debate about what form that change must take. <<
I think the biggest problem they had was idleness. The populace didn't want monarchs really ruling anymore, but wouldn't give them another serious job to do and wouldn't let go of them either. That creates a very toxic environment. It's bad for humans if they aren't working and don't feel needed. The public's desire for a chew toy is not helpful either. So if that problem doesn't get solved, either it will continue to simmer -- or more members of the royal family will simply walk away.
>> But for now, I mourn a woman who, to the best of her understanding and ability, served her country and its people.<<
Sooth. She was a great queen.
*ponder* But in the afterlife, I think she'll go back to being an ambulance driver. There just aren't many folks who can handle jobs like collecting souls from a battlefield, and I think she's cool enough to be good at that.

I like that idea.

>> to the tasteless "Ding dong the witch is dead" and other celebrations that the locals around here are having.<<
Wow, that is harsh. O_O Sure she had flaws, but so does everyone. She lived a long time, through some very rough situations, and had a hard role to play. I doubt few people could have done ... less worse with that hand.
>>Let Britain have a moment of silence. She was a cultural and political icon.<<
Sooth. And people are liable to miss the stabilizing influence she had, because the younger generations? Do not have her grace and fortitude.
Re: Thoughts
Date: 2022-09-10 05:24 am (UTC)Yeah. Lost a baseline level of respect for a lot of people.
>> I doubt few people could have done ... less worse with that hand. <<
Especially now, when it's so easy to dogpile for small things. She had a long life and wasn't that hated. Most of the people who were saying that were angry at the British Empire in general and taking it out on her specifically. Humans can be nasty.

They certainly do not. May they learn from her loss.
She had a lot of grit to live that long through the events she did, and still come out of it okay.

Re: Thoughts
Date: 2022-09-10 05:45 am (UTC)I've had that feeling for years. The world just keeps growing more despicable.

Dogpiling is a problem in general.
>> She had a long life and wasn't that hated.<<
Exactly.
>> Most of the people who were saying that were angry at the British Empire in general and taking it out on her specifically. Humans can be nasty.<<
Yep. The British Empire was a bad idea from start to finish. But it's not like the Queen actually ran the government anymore. Which is part of the problem.
>> They certainly do not. May they learn from her loss.<<
Oh, give it a few years. Even a lot of the haters will wish for her back after all the freshly unfettered drama that is likely to ensue.
>> She had a lot of grit to live that long through the events she did, and still come out of it okay.<<
Well said.
