ysabetwordsmith: Damask smiling over their shoulder (polychrome)
This poem is spillover from the November 2, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] chanter1944 and [livejournal.com profile] rix_scaedu. It also fills the "Family's more than just DNA. It's about people who care and take care of each other." square in my 11-1-21 card for the NCIS Bingo fest. This poem has been posted in memory of Shirley Barrette. It belongs to the Trichromatic Attachments thread of the Polychrome Heroics series. It follows "The Things You Do," "Never Accept an Apology," "Spiraling Out of Control," "The Fourth for My Enemies," "When in a Dark Place," "Our Power to Change," and "Bad Turn to Good," so read those first or this won't make much sense.

Note: This poem deals in polyamory, intimacy, and the squirrely family dynamics of Tarnish and friends.

Today is sunny and mild.  It started out calm, but then turned blustery again.  Earlier I took pictures around the yard.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a small flock of sparrows, a small flock of mourning doves, a robin, a grackle, a male cardinal, and two fox squirrels.

I had been hoping to start planting seeds today, but now it's too windy for that.  :/   So instead I spread compost around the wagonwheel garden.

EDIT 4/16/22 -- I  started digging grass out of the flowerbed near the telephone pole.

EDIT 4/16/22 -- I finished digging grass out of the flowerbed.

EDIT 4/16/22 -- I spread compost around the hollyhock and the telephone pole, then dumped the rest over the adjacent flowerbed.

EDIT 4/16/22 -- I dug grass from around the support wire by the telephone pole.

EDIT 4/16/22 -- I trimmed brush along the driveway.  As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

18. If a child somehow survived and grew up in the wilderness without any human contact, how “human” would they be without the influence of society and culture?

Not very. It depends on the age and condition of the child, and how long they spend alone, but in general the "wild child" has little or no human culture. However, they do tend to pick up the culture of other animals around them.  They are still human in body and for purposes of ethical consideration, but their culture and personality usually take a very different shape.  This inclines other people to violate their rights, trying to force them into human culture, which rarely works and usually ends in tragedy.  It works great in fiction though, and is a popular trope.
