Due to a confluence of family and holiday activities, I have not yet finished posting all the sale poems. We have more going on today, too. But it's been a lovely holiday season this year. Some problems are nice to have. :)  You can read the poems already posted by looking on the sale page, where the titles are linked.


Poetry in Microfunding:

There is one open epic, but it's not actually posted yet.  Watch for "Celebrate and Cherish" to appear presently.


The weather has been mostly moderate.  We had snow last week, rain this week, so now all the snow is gone and we have puddles instead.  Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a small flock of sparrows, a small flock of mourning doves, several dark-eyed juncos, several cardinals, a pair of downy woodpeckers, and a squirrel. While there was snow on the ground, I could see pheasant tracks in the south lot, some angling farther into the yard.  They may have been attracted to the water dish and the birdseed on the ground.

Today's Adventures

Today we went up to Amish territory.

We shopped at Beachy's, which sells a lot of bulk goods.  Among the things we found: fenugreek (for my shadrasa masala),  rubbed sage (that is a faint gray-green instead of yellow-brown), unhomogenized grass-fed milk (chia pudding! yogurt drinks! ruby hot chocolate!), dried shiitake mushrooms, filberts / hazelnuts, duck eggs, licorice allsorts.

We stopped at a smaller grocery store that sells the delicious peanut butter powerballs, and also picked up some spiced apple rings.

If you are hunting for ethnic and/or historic ingredients, and you have an Amish community near you, look there for things you can't find in a regular grocery store.  :D,

Allerton Circle School

About 30% of Circle School students go on to outdoor careers such as landscaping, farming, permaculture design, or park service.   Around 15% become scholars of such topics as astronomy, mythology, or ancient languages.  About 10% of students go on to a career in the performing arts or related fields including music, dance, theater, teaching, or organizing such events.  Another 10% go into either a Pagan profession (like running a magical supply store) or interfaith work.

Round buildings come in various sizes.  One set of standard models ranges from 4-meter external diameter with 12 square meters inside to 7 meters external and 38 square meters inside.

The front office occupies a small round building near the main entrance from County Road 1400 N.  It serves the everyday school functions with desks, printers, a half-circle couch and table. The main administrative offices are in the lodge on Blue Heron Lane.

The Mooncoin School Store offers many supplies.  On the left you can glimpse the cash register and checkout counter.  There are candles, hoodoo materials, altar tools, Pagan books, stones and incense, statues, general school supplies, Montessori materials, Waldorf toys, Pagan toys for Imbolc and Ostara.  It also has a ritual room, public bathroom, laundry room, and sun porch.

On the second floor it has living space for staff including a kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom.  This is the blue bedroom.  Another bedroom has a musical theme and many books.  On the third floor is the master bedroom and its bathroom, along with a sitting room.

This birdfeeding station is just outside the sun porch in the back yard.

The nurse's office stands near the front office in a similar building. It offers a Healthy Touch program, as well as first aid available in conventional and several alternative styles.

See a long view and closeup of the counseling house, then look inside.  This is the view looking toward the door.  It has a desk, easy chair, and couch for when counseling is in session.  Here you can see the Roundel sign outside.

Allerton Circle School Consultation Room
This consultation room is just big enough to hold two chairs and a pedestal for a contemplative statue. It provides a private meeting space for faculty and/or students.

Upcycling is one of the subjects customarily taught at Circle Schools but rarely found in conventional ones. Because Pagan traditions view everything in circles and cycles, they consider upcycling an essential life skill. In addition to the mainstream band instruments, Circle Schools teach a variety of instruments popular in contemporary Pagan culture including 6-stringed and 12-stringed guitar, lute, lap harp, doumbek, and bodhran. Modules for individual faiths may include additional instruments particular to their tradition, such as the oxhorn in Asatru. Voice training includes individual and choral singing. All students receive a basic education in how to perform and appreciate music. Those with particular interest and/or aptitude may choose to devote more time to musical study and take advanced lessons. This makes it a great option for musically gifted people who don't want to spend all day cooped in a room learning music written by dead composers. About 10% of students go on to a career in the performing arts or related fields including music, dance, theater, teaching, or organizing such events.

In Circle Schools, many classes are holistic, making them much more interdisciplinary than conventional classes. A class on permaculture may span ecology, botany, horticulture, zoology, geology, meteorology, and geometry.

Among the advanced math classes is one on Stone Circles, which includes the physics of building them and the geometry of using them. Nobody gets bored in this math class -- and successful graduates come out of it with a stonemoving certificate that can lead directly to a job in landscaping. Graduates also have the option of going to a construction training center for an internship (at 16+ with parental permission, like for a car) in light construction equipment (wheel loader, backhoe, motor grader, etc.) or an apprenticeship (18+) as a heavy equipment operator (cranes, bulldozers, forklifts, etc.). About 25% of Circle School students go on to outdoor careers such as landscaping, farming, permaculture design, or park service.

In T-America, the terms are better and the training goes a little faster. It doesn't take long to earn a certificate for using one piece of light equipment, although an internship for light equipment operator takes about 6 months in most places. Working on the apprenticeship program full-time, 4,000 hours is 100 weeks or 2 years allowing for vacation time. The class time adds about another 8 weeks, typically split into a 4-week introductory session followed by workshops scattered throughout. Heavy equipment operator is a skilled manual job with a very respectable pay rate.

Light Equipment Operator Job
This position works in a crew environment to assist the Road Department with the maintenance of County roads utilizing a variety of equipment and meets all of the requirements for Truck Driver/Laborer. The Light Equipment Operator possesses knowledge of: sub-base compaction, base construction and surface construction of un-surfaced, surfaced and chip sealed roads. Operator is proficient in the use of compaction equipment to reach desired compaction levels. Has the ability to dig, grade and place drainage structures in right-of-way entrances or under roads to prevent or relieve flooding and washouts, and the ability to place cattle guards and footers as directed. Worker performs daily maintenance check lists of equipment including DOT walk-around, pre-trip and operation inspections. Employees must be able to work independently. Minimum requirements: High School Diploma or GED certificate is required, One (1) year Class A CDL driving experience and One (1) year experience on all equipment as listed; Pneumatic roller, steel wheel vibratory roller, grid roller, road broom, wheel loader (4-yard bucket), backhoe, scrapers, show proficiency in special skills (welding, carpentry, concrete, surveying, etc.) motor grader, equipment maintenance and equipment transporting skills.

Recipe: Turtle Island Omelette

Actually, this is more of an algorithm. It's based on my earlier description of how to make a perfect personal omelette. I got a copy of The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen for Midwinter. Today we found duck eggs, grass-fed unhomogenized milk, and a decent tub of rubbed sage at Beachy's.

I therefore decided to apply some Turtle Island (North American) inspiration to omelettes. The way it used to work was that some time in spring, the first kid would come running back to camp with a nest's worth of random eggs in his shirt -- most often quail, duck, goose, or turkey. These could be cooked whole in hot ash, or cracked into the hollow of a stone, and topped with whatever fresh greens were sprouting at the time.

I used duck eggs, ghee because I didn't care to find the smokepoint of sunflower oil, sea salt, rubbed sage, a splash of grass-fed unhomogenized milk, canned mushrooms, a couple different cheeses, and for my partner's omelette about 1/8 cup of diced onion left over from making yesterday's elkloaf. Omelettes are fantastic for using up whatever leftover vegetables, meat, etc. you happen to have. A good combination is 1-3 seasonings and 2-5 fillings.

Bear in mind that the different tribes had quite diverse diets. There's no single Turtle Island cuisine, any more than there is a European cuisine. Coastal people ate seafood and sea vegetables, inland folks hunted large game or farmed crops, and so on. South American offerings further broaden the options.
