ysabetwordsmith: Damask smiling over their shoulder (polychrome)
This poem is spillover from the April 5, 2016 Poetry Fishbowl, but it has its roots in several discussions on [personal profile] dialecticdreamer's blog about characters with disabilities including "Disability On Screen" and "Future Illness and Ableism." The prompt from [personal profile] capri0mni about Claudius I is actually under "Prompts Open for April 2016." [personal profile] technoshaman prompted for Granny Whammy in my fishbowl. It also fills the "living legend" square in my 4-1-16 card for the Archetypal Characters Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] capri0mni. It belongs to the series Polychrome Heroics.

Warning: This poem discusses disability and discrimination, along with Granny Whammy's muleheaded stance that everyone with superpowers ought to be a superhero. If these are sensitive issues for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before reading onward.

WARNING: This poem contains some intense material. Highlight to read more detailed warnings, some of which are spoilers. This is heavy-duty hurt/comfort with emotional angst, messy medical details, trying to take care of a currently unconscious and generally traumatized person, difficulty balancing conflicts between Turq's mental and emotional needs without benefit of his input at the moment, complications and challenges of soup care in general, trying to figure out ways of minimizing or compensating for triggers, worrying about an injured friend, and other mayhem. On the whole, though, it's sweet to see Ansel and Ethan working so hard to take care of Turq as best they can. If these are touchy topics for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before deciding whether you want to read this right now. However, it contains some major plot developments, so skipping it may make subsequent poems seem more confusing or less justified.

ysabetwordsmith: (tired)
Today Doug helped me by digging holes, so we got all six of the Canadian hemlock shrubs planted and mulched.  I also cut a bunch of milk jugs into plant protectors.

I've seen several butterflies today.  White cabbage butterflies, also something small and orange.  Lots of ladybugs and worms while we were digging.

*gasp pant wheeze* *goflopnow*

EDIT: Picked up the tree wraps from the post office.  Put the first batch of those on seedlings.

The serviceberry tree now has its white blossoms.  Pretty.  Lilacs and elderberry are leafing out.

Based on an audience poll, this is the free epic for the April 5, 2016 Poetry Fishbowl meeting its $200 goal. It came out of the January 2016 [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] thnidu. It also fills the "Guilt Free: Crafts" square in my 8-1-15 card for the As You Like It Bingo fest.
