Here is a description of the transition movement -- shifting from overuse of the Earth to a more sustainable future -- with a list of useful books. I'm not convinced that energy descent is unavoidable, but it's likely enough to need planning; and we really can't continue indefinitely in the direction we're headed.

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is sword & sorcery. I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things relating to that theme. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.

Today's donation goal is $100. We're mostly using the fishbowl funds to buy groceries, but if enough comes in, this month I get a bit for plant shopping. That starts at $50 and goes up a little more at $100, so there's the goal. Fresh herbs for cooking, mmm...

Here is the first of the poems sponsored from today's fishbowl, prompted by [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect & [livejournal.com profile] jolantru and sponsored by [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect. This one is a free-verse epic, about a sword intended to redeem someone -- not a sword for a hero, but a sword for making a hero out of a villain.

Here is the freebie poem from today's fishbowl. [livejournal.com profile] moosl posted this picture of a garden gnome with glowing eyes. Until I read the caption, I thought somebody had hollowed him out and stuck a light inside the creepy little guy! So then I wondered why he would be like that, and got to thinking about [livejournal.com profile] wyld_dandelyon's prompt about the makers of magical artifacts, and it led to this...

The Carver’s Guard

The carver’s guard stands watch all night
And then stands watch all day.
When thieves sneak up, his eyes take light
To frighten them away.

He guards the carver’s secret dreams
And singes thieves with scorn –
The fireballs and laser beams
Are merely aimed to warn.

The dogs are only there for show
Beside the carver’s home.
The one on watch – but who could know? –
Is that wee garden gnome.
