Here is the freebie poem from today's fishbowl. moosl posted this picture of a garden gnome with glowing eyes. Until I read the caption, I thought somebody had hollowed him out and stuck a light inside the creepy little guy! So then I wondered why he would be like that, and got to thinking about wyld_dandelyon's prompt about the makers of magical artifacts, and it led to this...

The Carver’s Guard

The carver’s guard stands watch all night
And then stands watch all day.
When thieves sneak up, his eyes take light
To frighten them away.

He guards the carver’s secret dreams
And singes thieves with scorn –
The fireballs and laser beams
Are merely aimed to warn.

The dogs are only there for show
Beside the carver’s home.
The one on watch – but who could know? –
Is that wee garden gnome.

If I had sufficient butchskillz (and funds) I'd ream out a garden gnome and put a light in him to recreate the effect. I saw a concrete gargoyle done like that once. Because, you know, a witch's house needs some guardians visible to ordinary people.
