Snowflake Challenge 13: Community
Jan. 25th, 2026 05:43 pmSnowflake Challenge 13: Community
We spend a lot of time in fandom talking about community, and we mean a lot of different things by it. And that’s okay! I’m always interested in what other people think about community in fandom, and especially – considering the online nature of so much of fandom -- what are the places and groups that create/allow/encourage that community. These could be flashfic or challenge communities that encourage fanwork creation, discords for talking about the latest episode of your favorite show, exchanges, promptfests, watch-alongs, live streams… whatever promotes community for you.
Today’s challenge:
TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

One of my favorite fannish communities is
allbingo. As the name implies, it is a bingo fest comm. It hosts a new challenge each month. Sometimes there are two -- if a month already has a recurring fest, someone else can still run a new one then. January is Public Domain Day Bingo; February will be Valentines.
This community gets away from some of the common rules that many creators find to be a hassle. There are no hard limits; you can play any card at any time. You can make your own with our Bingo Card Generator, which goes from 1x1 to 7x7. You don't have to post everything in order to claim a fill, which is important for our participants who are selling original work or making fanworks for fests with a long delay before reveals. All sizes, all media, all fandoms and original works are welcome. This is a low-pressure, high-inspiration community.
Most activity occurs at the beginning of each month when the new fest goes live, and at the end of the month when people post their claims. Some folks often post in the middle though. It's always fun to see what fills people come up with. Much is fiction, sometimes art, but we've had some far-out fills like beads, crochet, even fused glass.
Do you love a fandom that doesn't have its own fest? You can sign up to run a bingo fest on
allbingo. The Community Calendar has instructions about what a fest entails. February and March have recurring fests, so a new fest could be added; April is wide open, as are some later months.

>> I just have to get up the nerve to do it.<<
Go for it! Consider starting small. The 2x2 postage stamp format is popular, and Valentines always has 3x3 subtopic cards as well as a 5x5 mixed card in the public set. If you like small works such as haiku or drabbles, those make good ways to explore. Other folks do icons or photos or whatever. Just play around with it.
