It does sound silly all crammed together like that, but it's very impressive. I've done that exercise where you try to swap as many slang terms as possible. It's hard.
Normally I just try to pop in a word or two that helps anchor the location. I particularly like the word-maps that show, for instance, the different names for a small body of running water. The more local color I want to add, the more slang terms I use. For a few characters, I shift how the words are written to show differences in pronunciation. Some of the younger characters in Daughters of the Apocalypse have a pretty thick Afta accent. That gets hard to write and read though, so I don't go that far often.
