ysabetwordsmith: Damask smiling over their shoulder (polychrome)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
These are the character notes for "The Hope and Freedom You Exude."

Otto Aschenborn -- He has pinkish-fair skin and gray eyes. His hair was brown in his youth, but is now receding and starting to go gray. He wears glasses. His heritage includes primarily American and German with a little Czech and Polish. He speaks English and German. He is 53 years old in 2016.
Otto lives in Omaha, Nebraska where he teaches art at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He's terrible at it, though. He feels jealous of talented students and likes to pick on people in class. Because he's good at academic politicking, Otto has held onto his job tenaciously. It helps that he likes serving on committees, especially as the head, which most artists hate. He even has a knack for illustrating the agenda points in a way that makes them easy to understand. Otto favors denim and khaki, but has a few nicer clothes for work. As a hobby, he enjoys solving jigsaw puzzles.
Qualities: Good (+2) Academic Politicking, Good (+2) Committees, Good (+2) Dexterity, Good (+2) Jigsaw Puzzles, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Poor (-2) Art Teacher

Nada Faraguna -- She has light olive skin, brown eyes, and light brown hair to her shoulders. She is short and curvy. Her heritage is primarily Croatian with a little Greek and Italian. She grew up speaking Croatian and Italian, and in recent years she has learned English with a slight accent. She was born in 1998 and is 18 years old in 2016.
Nada spent her childhood in Croatia, which had a fractious history marked by a financial crisis in 2008 and anti-government protests in 2011. Coastal fires in 2007 destroyed the family home near Poreč in Istria County. The political unrest finally drove her family to flee the country in late February of 2011. They went first to Italy, then later made their way to America.
Due to these upheavals in her youth, Nada feels bereft of identity and thinks she will never fit in anywhere or have a safe home. She suffers from deep insecurity and fears people in a position of authority, especially anyone who is loud or aggressive. This leaves her struggling to succeed in school. Although Nada made it into the University of Nebraska-Omaha, she worries about the future and whether she can handle college. When anxious, she nibbles on her lips or fingernails. However, she also appreciates the little things in life, seizes the moment, and never takes anything for granted. Her experiences have made her compassionate about other people's problems, and she's a good listener.
Nada will be starting at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in fall of 2016. She has already scheduled most of her courses. She plans to major in Global Studies with a region in Europe and themes in Identity, Culture, and Society and in Human Rights. She also intends a double minor in Art and in English-Creative Writing. She wants an education that will help her serve refugees and express her own experiences as one. For clubs, Nada has signed up for Amnesty International, Art League, Big Red Readers, Body Mind and Spirit, and Creative Writing Club. She prefers practical women's wear. Her base colors are black, gray, and khaki, accented with denim, dusty rose, and olive.
Qualities: Good (+2) Ambidextrous, Good (+2) Appreciative, Good (+2) Artist, Good (+2) Listener, Good (+2) Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Poor (-2) Being Forced to Leave One's Homeland
The Emotional Wound Thesaurus, pp. 148-149.

Croatia had a financial crisis in 2008 and anti-government protests in 2011. Fires ravaged the coast in 2007.
