Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, mild, and wet.

I fed the birds. I didn't get through the whole morning routine before it started to rain. We need the rain, but the timing was annoying.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

There were mosquito larvae in the red birdbath, so I dumped it and refilled it. I'll need to add a piece of mosquito dunk later.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I went back out for a walk. We've gotten a significant amount of rain. :D

I saw an indigo bunting.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Yay for the bunting! I've seen them here only once or twice.

Thoughts

We have some this summer. It's hit or miss. Each spring and fall, the birds shuffle the deck, and I get a random assortment of species that like to live in this general area who will stick around for the next season. There are some regulars like sparrows and cardinals, but the others change.

The random ones never seem to stick around. I only seem them at migration time. I thought maybe the red-headed woodpecker would stay around, since it was several days in a row, but I haven't seen him since the day I got that good photo.

I have random visitors that don't stick around. The orioles, rufous-sided towhees, and rose-breasted grosbeaks never have. I think at least one of the blue jays and one or more of the larger woodpeckers have stayed for the summer though. I haven't seen them but I hear them sometimes.
