This poem was written during the December 5, 2023 Poetry Fishbowl although not prompted by it. It fills the "Time" square in my 9-1-23 card for the Story Sparks Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony Barrette.
"A Trail Washed Away by Rain"
The past is a trail
washed away by rain,
every moment a bit of mist,
one among millions, coalescing
into drops that fall and fall,
erasing the path behind you
as your feet hurry ahead.
Footprints in the mud
last only for an instant
before they blur and
melt away, soon lost
in time's river far below.
Even when you turn
to look over your shoulder
at the places you have been,
and you can still see them
through the steadily falling rain,
only thin air stands between, and
there is no way to go back.
