Poem: "Isosceles Society"

ysabetwordsmithThis is today's freebie. It was inspired by a prompt from siliconshaman. It also fills the "sex" square in my 9-1-23 card for the Story Sparks Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the Ocracies series.
"Isosceles Society"
The Isocracy of San lay just south
of the Patriarchy of Darthalem and
the Matriarchy of Sherin, tucked into
a little notch where water welled up
from the roots of the mountains.
A quirk of magic made the people
who lived there more flexible than most.
They were born undifferentiated, and
as they grew, they flowed through
the features of sex and the traits
of gender, sampling this and that
without settling on any one thing.
It was only when they got older
that most of them began to form
relationships, and as each couple
or moresome fit themselves together,
they worked out with each other
who would become what.
Because of this, they
decided that it was silly
to sort their government on
the basis of sex or gender like
their neighbors to the north.
Instead they established
an isosceles society, in which
each person held equal power.
When a problem came up, then
a team was assembled to solve it
using whichever people seemed
to have the most useful skills for it.
That way, they could always tailor
a team as needed, and nobody got
stuck doing politics all of the time.
For people who grew up changing
with the wind, this worked perfectly.
