This is today's freebie, inspired by a prompt from my partner Doug. It also fills the "Kites" square in my 3-1-23 card for the March Is... Bingo fest.


"Paper into Cranes"


origami turns
paper into cranes, rabbits,
flowers, bowties, hats

paper kites rise on
the wings of the spring wind and
dance in the blue sky

carefully folded,
colorful gift boxes hold
treasures of candy

modular units
chain together to create
geometric shapes

this transformation
can turn a piece of paper
into anything

Notes

Origami is the art of folding paper into things. Patterns can make just about anything, including a kite that actually flies.

Once upon a time, I got invited to a room party at a con that was being held in a hotel near where I lived. I got involved in an intense conversation with someone I didn't know, and I was obsessing over someone I had a large case of unrequited lust for. The person I was talking to was an origami expert, and his fingers kept folding paper while we talked. When he finished, he had made a shiny metallic red heart shape for me.

Apparently that's what that guy was known for - stealth origami. Makes a point with it, then takes his paper and slips away.

Well, it wasn't a deity of love or lust. I never did manage to get my desires requited. The guy is fairly well known in organized SF fandom, because he always leaves random bits of origami. And then someone handed me a paper cup of Romulan ale.
