Poem: "Tretår"

ysabetwordsmithThis poem came out of the February 7, 2023 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by nsfwords. It also fills the "Pink Calcite - Emotional Wholeness" square in my 2-1-23 card for the Valentines Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the series Eloquent Souls.
"Tretår"
[February 2023]
Fritjof was not a peacemaker.
He only worked for them.
He drove trucks or flew planes
to bring in whatever they needed.
He loaded and unloaded cargo.
It was hard, tiring work
but he was good at it.
Also it was work where
he didn't have to look at
the brown smudge on
his left wrist that was
probably a soulmark but
refused to come clear.
Fritjof was debating
whether to go back for
a third cup of coffee when
the pretty blonde woman
refilled her own cup then
waved at his, saying, "Tretår."
"Ja, tack," he replied, and
she filled it but her hand shook.
Setting down the coffee pot,
she tilted her hand to show him
his own words gilded on her wrist.
Startled, Fritjof tipped his hand and
saw the smudge had changed to Tretår.
Then she showed him her left wrist,
which read in elegant letters, Ängel.
Fritjof slumped. He didn't want
to be the third wheel in a relationship.
The woman was undaunted though.
She introduced herself as Eira and
told him her husband was Sigfrid
who would be pleased to meet him.
Fritjof didn't really believe it, but
when he introduced himself with,
"Jag är tretår," Sigfrid grinned
and replied, "Trevligt att träffas!"
There were the words on
Fritjof's right wrist now, forever
declaring that Sigfrid was
indeed pleased to meet him.
Apparently Sigfrid found
his third refill remark amusing.
Fritjof still wasn't comfortable
with the situation, and didn't
want to hop right into bed
with two strangers who
were already together.
They didn't seem
to mind, though.
Eira and Sigfrid
never pressured
Fritjof to do anything
that he wasn't happy with,
even though he was supposed
to be their third soulmate.
They just let him be himself,
no matter the mismatch.
Fritjof stayed as gruff as ever,
and kept delivering supplies, and
they thanked him every time,
insisting that they couldn't
do their work without his.
Well, that was probably true.
Oddly enough, Fritjof found
that he enjoyed their company.
He liked listening to them twitter
at each other, bright as birdsong.
He enjoyed watching them laugh
and play together, even if he
didn't feel like joining in.
They came to him for
grounding, for practicality,
because Eira and Sigfrid
were both idealists.
Fritjof was good at
all sorts of practicalities.
He could cook and clean
as well as driving a truck
or heaving boxes about.
To his surprise, they
actually fit together,
all three of them.
The new relationship
brought them balance,
an emotional wholeness
they hadn't had before.
It turned out, he wasn't
a third wheel after all.
