Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.
I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows, a female downy woodpecker, and a fox squirrel.
I cut brush along the east side of the flowerbeds.
When I went out there, an owl flushed from a tree, probably a great-horned owl from the size although I didn't see his ear tufts. Then at least three hysterical crows started cawing and flying around. Okay, so apparently we're doing this again. One summer they kept hounding that poor owl for month after month. I felt sorry for the owl, but very flattered by the competition. I can see why they'd fight over my yard; it's probably the best territory within several miles. :D
EDIT 2/13/23 -- I cut more brush along the east side of the flowerbeds.
The forest garden is more active now. I've seen a flock of sparrows, several starlings, and a male downy woodpecker.
EDIT 2/13/23 -- I picked up branches and added them to the firepit.
EDIT 2/13/23 -- We burned off the firepit again. It worked much better this time. I was gratified to see my pyramid of long branches collapsing inward like it's supposed to.
I saw a pair of cardinals in the forest garden. :D While we were in the ritual meadow, a male cardinal flew overhead shrieking about the forest burning down. I tried to explain that it was just a firepit, but I'm not sure I got the concept across.
