This poem is spillover from the March 2, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
jake67jake. It also fills the square "The Great Escape" in my 2-1-21 "Romance Book Titles" card for the Valentines Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with

"Do What Your Heart Tells You"
The month after Princess Diana
survived a nearly-fatal car crash,
she launched a new campaign
from her shiny pink wheelchair.
"It is not right that our public figures
should have to fear for their safety
when they step outside," she said.
"This is not the first time I have
been hunted through the streets,
and I am not alone. Paparazzi
of the world, you are on notice."
She began to lobby among the lords
for new laws to protect the people
from unscrupulous stalkers and
journalists who cared more about
getting a story than about human lives.
The lords looked at the People's Princess
sitting in her wheelchair, and wrote the laws.
Newspapers and magazines all around
the globe kicked up a fuss, complaining
that her campaign was censorship.
"I cannot speak to anyone else's sense
of right or wrong, just my own," she said.
"I feel that everyone should be free
to travel without fear of being chased
or hurt or killed. I feel that when you
see a wrong, you should right it, so
that is why I support these protections.
Only do what your heart tells you."
Princess Diana spoke about
the car crash as her Great Escape,
and how lucky she had been to live
through it. Other celebrities had
not been as lucky as she was,
and she wanted to prevent
further senseless fatalities.
Soon the new laws were passed,
the United Kingdom became a haven
for actors and aristocrats, models
and millionaires and everyone
whose face was too well known.
They flooded into the country
and enriched it with their presence.
Princess Diana welcomed them
from her new wheelchair, this one
painted like Queen Mary's Garden.
And the streets remained peaceful.

Date: 2022-01-02 10:17 am (UTC)If only history had gone that way... Princess Diane was also campaigning against mines and generally anti-war... her lover/significant other at the Dodi Al Fayed was damn wealthy and had quite a bit of pull with the UAE, and supported her.
If she'd lived, the conditions for 9/11 to happen likely would've changed, and it might not have occured.
