I am greatly bothered by the degree to which modern humans emulate robots, and indeed, are required to do so if they want to keep a job and therefore continue surviving. They're literally trained not to solve problems but to follow a rote list. So problems don't get solved, and folks generally learn that asking for help is often pointless.

>>(I think this was the same conversation where I explained that I believe black people about racism because of my experiences with sexism...especially when guys say that sexism is a thing of the past.)<<

Most people go by their own lived experience. Learning to substitute someone else's or knowledge gained from a book is a different skill that not everyone has. Going against your own instincts is even harder. Like, I know intellectually that some people have difficulty reading and therefore hate it. Me, I love it so much that I have to mentally translate, "Pretend it's math." Then I can think, okay, there are workarounds for math, what can I do to minimize the barriers for this person in text? So I would do things like look at the reference books to find the page in the index with relevant entries, and say, "Here, there are topics you need on this page." That lightens the workload without doing everything for them.

Of course, with racism and sexism, those are easily proven with facts. If they were in the past, we would not presently have huge gaps in pay based on those factors. This is something that could easily be fixed by requiring that everyone doing the same job get the same base pay, and that increases be granted only for objective reasons like "after 1 year, everyone gets a $0.50/hour raise" or "employees with a perfect safety record get $25 extra for that quarter." (It wouldn't solve the problem of disliked groups getting shut out of decent jobs, but at least would cut the same-job gaps.) That people choose not to make this simple change means that they prefer discrimination. It is something that any company could fix if they cared to, and indeed, a few have. Most don't.
