This poem is spillover from the July 6, 2021 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] chanter1944. It also fills the "New Year" square in my 7-1-21 card for the Winterfest in July Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. "For the Totality of Who You Are"

[Monday, April 25, 2016]

Marge still wasn't happy with
her body, but she was getting closer.

At least it had stopped shifting randomly
from one day to the next, so she could
start to get a handle on her superpowers.

Currently, she looked human most of
the time, which was a huge improvement.

She could also change into the form
of a giant, neon-colored mosquito.
The senses that came with the shape
were bizarre, but she'd had worse.

Last year her shifts had slowed down,
then stopped around the new year.

She'd had this superpower for
four months, the longest yet.

If she was stuck with this,
she'd settle for it, because
it was a lot less awful than
shifting all the time was.

Then again, she might
regain other forms
with more control.

Her life was so weird,
if she wrote it down,
nobody would publish it,
because it was just too weird.

Marge had learned quite a lot
about superpowers in general
and shapeshifting in particular.

Dr. G had taught her how
to pay attention to her body,
which made it easier to grasp
each shape as it came and went.

Marge didn't love her body yet,
but at least she didn't hate it
the way that she used to.

She leafed through the stack
of college handouts again.

She was thinking about
going to college, which
she hadn't done before.

Maybe a state school
would suit, where it would
be easy to change majors
if she needed to do that
for superpower reasons.

For now, Marge thought that
Psychology might be a good start.

Then she saw a quote on a flyer:
In order to find real happiness,
you must learn to love yourself
for the totality of who you are
and not just what you look like
.

Maybe she'd take Gender Studies too.

Notes:

"Most important, in order to find real happiness, you must learn to love yourself for the totality of who you are and not just what you look like."
Portia de Rossi

Large state colleges tend to offer the widest selection of majors, useful for students with uncertainties that may require them to change tracks.
