Recent discussions have turned up two opposed meanings of the phrase "Netflix and chill."

* Watch television due to feeling too tired or unfocused for anything else.

* Have sex.

I believe that this is an iteration of a much older conflict in which some people use euphemisms such as "Would you like to see my card collection?" to mean "Let's go have sex," whereas other people with special interests like to show off their hoards and view those belonging to others so they use those phrases in the direct meaning.  Such misunderstandings are extremely frustrating to both parties, and in some cases, contribute to sexual assault.

Therefore, if you are using this phrase or hear others using it, and the context involves a choice of action rather than idle conversation, it would be prudent to confirm which definition is meant before deciding.

I was thinking yesterday of putting a couple lines in a fic to the tune of:

"So. Hulu and froyo?"

"…do you mean Netflix and chill?"

"No, I mean movies and ice cream, unless I can say I mean the other thing without you punching me. —uh, can I…?"

"Come over here and find out."

Reminds me of an encounter I witnessed between two bears (the human kind) many moons ago.

"Men, are scum. Boys, are toys."
"Which am I?"
I forget exactly what was said next, but basically they left together to find out.. ;)

And then there's the German for it: "Haben Sie Feuer?" (Lit. "Do you have fire?" idiomatically: Are you hot (for me)? (Interestingly, that's the _formal_ sense... which, I suppose, is correct if you're asking such a thing, to be polite... :D (which then ping-pongs into the song "Du hast mich" by Rammstein... which is the _intimate_ sense... given that that song is popular in certain kinds of clubs, you can figure the rest out...

"Innuendo" is, if you say it slowly, so meta ;)

pfft

my favorite such lines I've written are actually these:
Marinette: "Since you planned our first date, Adrien, I'm gonna plan our second. You, me, and Ultimate Mecha Strike III." [She waves the game box.] "But you know how competitive I get. You're only going to win if I'm…distracted." [She slowly slides one sleeve and bra strap off her shoulder.] "You know you can't win this game with simple button mashing. You need technique."

[In this next clip, the camera angle is slightly different, to catch Marinette hyperventilating all over a sympathetic Rose and Juleka in the background of one side of the frame.]

Interesting and a new phrase to me. The "watch TV" definition sounds likely; there's an older phrase, "Would you like to come up and see my etchings?" dating to around the turn of the century, the 1899-1900 one, that is! Some cartoons and old movies referenced it, now don't ask me which ones, herpderp.

And even then, there were jokes where women complained that once they got up there, he ACTUALLY showed them his ETCHINGS.

A female friend (who had been one with "benefits") invited me over to see her etchings. In front of people who knew about the former "benefits" bit.

It was deliberate and we did look over her etchings. While snickering about what they likely thought was going on. :-)

I once owned a Josef Eidenberger etching. It didn't feature into any of my seduction efforts, though. :)

If not for the massive amount of time I spend online, I wouldn't have a clue what Netflix and Chill means.

And the question, "Are you in the Lifestyle" is a recognition phrase for both BDSM folk and swingers.

See, I'd've been caught off guard by that.

"Watch netflix and chill"="Watch movie, eat popcorn/other junk food inserted) becaus that's what our family does. We'll be watching netflix; she'll be nitting, he'll be on FB sometimes, and we'll all just sorto f chat, so it's in my brain that way.

(We also speak nonmundane things, but that's beside the point and shit. LOL)

... Ohgod. I had never heard the phrase 'Netflix and chill' to mean anything other than the obvious: Go flop somewhere and watch television. Had it not been pointed out to me that it's sometimes a euphemism for having sex, I would never have had a clue. Ewwwwwwww. :(

A work around ive found for the phrase is tag on a platonic. Do u want to platonic netflix ect. That or toss up a suggestion for things traditionally not used in the frisky environs like popcorn for someone who might need such an obvious hint.

The first is clunky yes but effective and hasnt been misconstrued yet.

This reminds me of the DM me a pic of his gundam story, though inverted.

I've almost always used euphemisms, though only with people who already understand the meaning. I've never tried to initiate a relationship without being explicit with what I meant by it.

That is super interesting actually.

I wish it was a more literal meaning. I would love to meet up with friends and just binge watch and hang out and have an easy phrase to txt with. Damn sex fiends XD
