Snow

It's snowing here.  This is a fine, light snow falling straight down, like powdered sugar sifting down to coat the world.  I almost never see snow falling straight down, but there's not a breath of air outside, it's perfectly calm.  In fact nothing is moving excep the snow; no birds, no squirrels, no rabbits.  All is still but for the slow sift of snow.  Everything is shades of gray, no black or white.  Pale ash-gray snow, slate trees, charcoal tires.  A world with soft edges.  It is very beautiful.

We're having weird weather. Right now it's perfectly calm outside, yet there's high wind advisories, a fire weather watch, and it's supposed to snow in a few days.

That's what climate change does: it makes weather less logical, less predictable, more chaotic, and more extreme. As with any system when you remove its buffers wholesale.

Ah well, Demeter will repeat the Lesson of the Groves as often as necessary.

I think that one is referenced in Erysichthon of Thessaly's myth, where he cut down a grove of trees sacred to Demeter and was punished with unrelenting hunger.

Yes. Demeter's sacred groves are always on the top of a hill. Mess with her groves and she will blight your crops.

Cut all the trees from Mediterranean soil, and as soon as the wind blows, all the soil flies away -- resulting in barren fields.

Oh ho, that makes marvelous sense. ARE/WERE they always on a hilltop? What about other sacred outdoor spaces?

Insofar as I know, yes, that was the customary location of her sacred groves.

Many farmers had a shrine by the field -- these were common for all kinds of deities and local spirits.

That sounds nice. I normally like snow, but we got too much a few weeks ago and now it's just stressful. I like having power and internet and heat too much to want snow right now. We keep getting flurries and even though nothings been sticking everyone on campus is really stressed. Like, loud panicky swearing when it starts snowing stressed.

Too much snow and not enough remediation is definitely stressful. :( This is just enough to be pretty, not a nuisance.

Those are the best conditions for being able to hear the snow - the tiny chiming hiss of individual flakes landing on other snowflakes.
