Today we used a shovel and bucket to start spreading sawdust from the treeline along the road where we had a couple of stumps ground out.  This will help reduce weeds along the new line of shrubs.

EDIT:
Second round: spread sawdust around base of utility pole.

I hope you laid cardboard down first. (It kills out the grass and keeps it from growing up through your new mulch for at least a year.)
It works better than landscaper's cloth and you can usually get it for free.

Just dumping mulch. We've used landscaping fabric before with some success, but I haven't noticed cardboard working all that great when I've tried it. And I often have only enough energy to spread the mulch, not get fancy with it.

The reason why I prefer the cardboard to landscaper's cloth is because it eventually rots. Landscaper's cloth has to be pulled up if you ever want to rework the ground under it and that's a real bummer.
I understand not having enough energy to get fancy...I'm having troubles with that myself right now.
