Amnesty International says Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects the allegations

CAIRO (AP) — Amnesty International accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip during its war with Hamas, saying it has sought to deliberately destroy Palestinians by mounting deadly attacks, demolishing vital infrastructure and preventing the delivery of food, medicine and other aid.

The human rights group released a report Thursday in the Middle East that said such actions could not be justified by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel, which ignited the war, or the presence of militants in civilian areas. Amnesty said the United States and other allies of Israel could be complicit in genocide, and called on them to halt arms shipments

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

What is your definition of evil?

Here ya go! I wrote a whole article on this topic: "The Sword Without a Hilt: Concepts of Evil." As you can see, I have found many excellent descriptions for the various facets of evil.

So the Satanists raised a huge amount of menstrual supplies for women in need

First, contrast this with Christians abusing women by taking away their health care.

Second, consider that Satanism has overwhelmingly populated by men, although it has a growing feminist branch.

Now, who is on the side of light here?

"Why Are Fire Users Always Evil?" is a brilliant analysis of the (largely untapped) potential of fire magic for constructive rather than destructive uses in worldbuilding and storytelling.

This is the kind of thing that I come to speculative fiction and geekdom for. It's rare nowadays, so seeing an example like this makes me very happy. :D

From my own writing, Fireheart is one of the more heroic people with Fire Powers, and in fact you can see him and several others creating an Eternal Flame in "Gone the Sun."

Revisit those who have passed during the year. These entries from my "Moment of Silence" tag highlight those who have died recently. Some of my posts have a "Carry on the Work" section regarding the person's accomplishments in case anyone else wants to explore those.

My political “dilemma”

The entire Republican platform is built on hatred for non-white, non-straight people. Again, this is a crappy dilemma, because of course I’m pro-Democrat then.

Except that I wish voting for Harris didn’t also make me feel like I’m giving tacit approval to genocide.

Here's a great rant about procreative responsibility. It says a lot of things that I think, and I'm happy that I didn't have to spend time writing it myself.

Children and Responsibility

When a person enables the creation of a new helpless yet sentient living being, they should be responsible for taking care of this creature and ensuring its wellbeing. Be it a puppy, a pet rabbit or a human baby. But the question is who exactly ought to be held responsible for children—their biological parents or the society that forces people to give birth against their will?

The great nonreligious gender realignment

Older Americans who left their childhood religion included a greater share of men than women. In the Baby Boom generation, 57 percent of people who disaffiliated were men, while only 43 percent were women. Gen Z adults have seen this pattern flip. Fifty-four percent of Gen Z adults who left their formative religion are women; 46 percent are men.

I suspect that the more certain religions try to force modern women into rigid gender stereotypes, the faster they will hemorrhage members.

Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology
Paperback – September 19, 2023
by Shane Hawk (Editor), Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. (Editor)

Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home.

A bold challenge to the orthodox definition of life

In “Life As No One Knows It,” Sara Imari Walker explains why the key distinction between life and other kinds of “things” is how life uses information.

For Walker and those who share her views (like me), life is the only physical system that uses information. While it’s possible to describe a rock in terms of the information in its crystal structure, the rock doesn’t care. The physics of the rock doesn’t require the informational view because information is not needed to account for the rock’s behavior. Life, however, is a different ballgame. Life needs information. It senses it, stores it, copies it, transmits it, and processes it. This insight is, for Walker, the way to understand those strange aspects of life like its ability to set its own goals and be a “self-creating and self-maintaining” agent.

Do you need religion to be a moral person?
Religion is a product of, and not a source of, our evolutionary moral dispositions.

This article has some interesting observations about how morality works.
