My partner Doug pointed me to this essay about why we have no stand-alone superhera movies about, say, Wonder Woman or Black Widow.

Basically because the people who make those movies think girls have cooties.

Yeah, say that to her face, you sissies.  That's some action I'd pay to see.  I would love to see Black Widow rip through you like she did that minion squad in Iron Man 2.

I want a Black Widow movie so bad. I find it "interesting" that TPTB don't have a problem featuring her prominently in Iron Man II and CA:TWS, but won't put her at the top of her own movie. I'm going to read the link now, but I have a feeling I'm not going to like the conclusion.

Last I heard, a Black Widow solo film is... probably happening? It's listed on the actress's imdb page as "announced," anyway. There's certainly been a lot of talk about it, and unlike DC, who keep whining about how a Wonder Woman movie is "too hard," mostly what Marvel has said is "We have to do Avengers 2 first."

Ooo ...

That would be made of SO MUCH WIN.

Not quite a Black Widow film, but! Marvel just announced today that Peggy Carter is getting her own spin-off show about the early days of SHIELD: http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/05/08/abc-shield-agent-carter/

We need to petition Joss Whedon to do Wonder Woman. He brought us Buffy and brought us that wonderful Black Widow scene in The Avengers, among other stuff. If he isn't already pushing for a Wonder Woman movie, we should urge him to do so.

Joss Whedon was working on the script for a Wonder Woman movie several years ago, which project was ultimately switched from a live-action theatrical film to a direct-to-DVD animated release. By that time Joss had bailed (or been fired by DC, depending on which rumors you opt to believe). My favorite out of the batch was that Joss quit the project because the higher-ups weren't giving him casting decisions, and wanted to shove Lindsey Lohan down his throat as WW.

Eh. I personally have some issues with Whedon and the way he writes women. I'd honestly rather see the movie given to a capable female director or at least women writers. If we're going to make a movie about a feminist icon, let's give the awesome women of Hollywood a chance to shine.

Also, Whedon is now under contract with Marvel for at least the next couple years, so there's no way he can do a Wonder Woman movie until after his contract is out, and I think everyone would like to see a Wonder Woman film before that.

Yes...

If I were behind a superhera movie, then yes, I'd pack the personnel with as many women as I could get.

Actually, it's not so much the people who make the movies...well, not all of them [JJ.Abrams, I'm looking at you, you misogynistic sod!] It's more the people who fund them, who order the movies to be made, that think like 12 year old boys... i.e the Studio Execs, the shadowy, unaccountable, unknown, forces behind the film & Tv industry. I.e the sort fo wise-guys that cancelled Firefly and thought Sharknando was good idea..

I know I am super late, but there was Electra, a Marvel spin-off movie from Daredevil. The lead is female. Marvel went there, DC no. So I am more optimistic about Black Widow.

Hmm...

I have not seen Electra yet. Have to keep an eye out; I liked the Daredevil movie for its elegant portrayal of his sonar-sense.
