Here is a nice sadistic list of ways to torment your characters.  Many of these are personal favorites.  There's a reason I once had a character say to me, "May I have my soul back now?  I see you're finished with the wringer."

Lois Bujold has been quoted as saying she thinks up plots by musing on what could be the worst possible thing she could do to her characters. Poor Miles Vorkosigan!

I think that's my failing as a writer... I'm way too nice to my characters. [mind you, what they do to the rest of the story world isn't so nice.]
