This virtual keyboard doesn't look very practical to me, but it is cool.

Clever idea, but you have to catch your hard surface in the wild and balance the gadget.

As far as the small keyboards on the devices are concerned, my son and his friends just hold it between their hands and type with their thumbs at about the same speed as I type on a full keyboard.

I rather suspect that this will be of interest to older gadgetophiles and the youngsters will not see a need for it

As a youngster, I disagree. Because I touch-type 100wpm. Now, I'm good at thumb-typing. But I am not 100wpm, and the big reason right now that I actually do not have a PDA, iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry or anything else like it is because the typing interfaces drive me batshit. I would rather have the real convenience of a phone-sized-phone that I can thumb-type on, or the real convenience of a computer-sized computer.

For me, the issue would just be one of, how good is the actual keyboard? What does it work on? How reliable is it? If it's actually as good as an ordinary keyboard, can project onto most surfaces and is pretty reliable, I'd love one.

See now, these are valid concerns. This is the kind of thought process I like to see when people are trying to assess new technology. Will it really work? How would use it? What are its potential drawbacks and advantages compared to other tech?

I have something in one of my scifi worlds that I hope they invent soon. It's called "digital paper." A paper-thin sheet that is a computer. The one in my scifi world uses nanotech to do it.
