I haven't done these, but years ago I found an online "university" that offered free classes using IRC. I found the experience very interesting, and learned some useful things in the process.
My partner and I looked over some of these last night, as a friend had sent us the same link. My partner needs to brush up on some of his engineering for job interviews, and I found quite a few of them fascinating for knowledge's sake.
