Um.. I care to differ w/ the OP. I'd say they've already been taken away. I mean Habeus Corpus was effectively neutered and NO ONE made even a whimper about it, except certain individuals like Keith Olbermann.
It is sad, indeed. :( However, more Americans SHOULD be made aware of how few rights they really have.
Uhm, I still have rights... but Harper has been making "gosh, the US has the right idea!" noises for quite a while now - though he stopped rather suddenly recently rather like an investment banker hitting the pavement.
Reguardless, I don't think his chances of re-election are good. Calling the election now was a stupid idea; unless he thought that it getting overshadowed by the US election was actually going to work. And hey, with the performance of the GOP (the Tory's traditional analogue) - it's backfiring quite nicely.
While I agree with the overall premise (these bills are outrageous), I would really like to see a post like this that WASN'T relentlessly reductionist on this topic.
Almost all of those laws are facing legal challenges that will probably overturn them or are built on legal logic that is, at best, a sand castle (the basic idea is that we're at war, but that doesn't hold up, because we're not, and the minute the Republicans pick on somebody who has the capacity to fight back, these laws will go up in smoke). None of them will survive the Bush administration in their current form. I'm all for supporting the ACLU, but it's worth keeping an eye on this sort of thing.
