All true, to that I'll add another point though:

if you use names in a different language, make sure you don't mis-spell them.

That's the thing that throws me out of a story faster than about everything else.

I try to use the spelling, or at least A spelling, that fits the target culture. But many names -- most of them, even -- have multiple spellings. It's not always clear what goes where.

True, but...honestly as much as I agree with the OP, I lost any interest in reading her/his works when I found 'D'artagnon' and 'M. le Comte de La Ferre' in her post (never mind that the last one wasn't an historical character and was only very slightly based on one).

'D'Artagnan' and 'de la Fère' (with or without the accent) aren't that hard to get right.

I think it's more aggravating with established characters, or even names that also belong to someone better known.
