I wouldn't call the rates quoted in my post any kind of authority. That was generally what I saw, but I didn't do any kind of mathematical average. XD
When it comes to rates, though, I've found that if you charge what you're worth, and are willing to stick to your guns, you will find a calibre of people who are willing to pay the price. And often - speaking as someone who sometimes charges $150 an hour and who also works on legal aid for people who are paying nothing - those who pay more also appreciate you more.
Don't be afraid to charge what you're worth, though if your heart moves you to lower your rate for a special case, don't be afraid to do that, either.

Sadly, my mileage varies. Most people just don't have that kind of money to spend. I'd rather take what I can get than wind up with nothing -- and even at these prices, a fair number of people can't afford them.

That's very true, and if that's the decision you've made, then go for it. Personally, I find people undervalue their time a lot, in general, and I hate to see that happening.
