People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

What is the most fertile soil for hatred? Fear, ignorance, jealousy, or something else entirely? Is it possible that some people are genetically predisposed to hatred?

ysabetwordsmith: Text -- three weeks for dreamwidth, in pink (three weeks for dreamwidth)
This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about goal-setting frameworks for [community profile] goals_on_dw. Read Part 1: Introduction to Goal-Setting Frameworks, Part 2: The 1-3-5 Rule, Part 3: The 12-week Year, Part 4: ABCS (Achievable, Believable, Committed, Specific), Part 5: Backward Goal, Part 6: BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals), Part 7: BSQ (Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick), Part 8: CLEAR (Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, Refinable), Part 9: Goal Pyramid, Part 10: Golden Circle, Part 11: GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward), Part 12: HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult), Part 13: KPI (Key Performance Indicators, Part 14: MASTER (Measurable, Achievable, Specific, Transforming, Evolving, Relevant), Part 15: NCT (Narratives, Commitments, and Tasks), Part 16: OKR (Objectives, Key Results).

Part 16: OKR (Objectives, Key Results)

OKR stands for Objectives and Key Results. Objectives are qualitative descriptions of your chosen goals. They should challenge and motivate you. Key results the are things you measure in order to track your progress toward a goal. For each objective, aim to create about three to five key results. Your desired outcome will motivate you to improve the things you measure. A good way to express this is something like, "I will finish a book as measured by writing for one hour every day."

Today is mostly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds. I've seen several sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, a blue jay, and a brown thrasher.

I put the flats of pots outside and watered them.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- We went out to the Vintage Fair Market, the Charleston Food Forest (where I rescued some wild strawberries from the footpath), and Riley Creek Vintage where I found 3 plant stands.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I went out to construct the first strawberry tower, but discovered that the stacking pots don't have predrilled drain holes, so they need to be drilled first. 0_o  I wound up puttering around with other things.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- We got all the holes drilled in the stacking pots.  \o/  There are 12 stacking pots, each a cloverleaf with 3 planting pockets, and each pocket having 3 holes, so 108 holes in all.  We traded off drilling them.  I did okay with the power drill -- it's not too heavy for me to use, so that's helpful to know.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I assembled the first strawberry tower and planted it wtih 18 wild strawberry plants.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I assembled and planted about half of the second strawberry tower, then farming activity raised a cloud of dust so I had to quit precipitously.  I'll try again later.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I finished the second strawberry tower.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I watered the strawberry towers.  It turns out that the shape makes it very awkward to water more than the top two tiers, but with the drain holes in all the pots, if I pour enough water in the top, it seems to rain down to the rest of the pots.

I've seen a fox squirrel.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I tidied up the corner of the patio where I was potting plants.

EDIT 5/10/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

The first poppy is blooming near the driveway.  The peony bud under the fly-through feeder is showing a crack of hot pink, although the white ones elsewhere haven't started to open yet.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

This article talks about a 4D printed cast.  It's better than a plaster one.  However, it's nowhere near as good as this much older 3D printed one, which is slimmer and uses sophisticated patterning to reinforce the area right over the break via biomimicry.  And of course, since America has shitty health care, these improvements remain minimally available in favor of the inferior plaster version.

Chimpanzee groups drum with distinct rhythms

New research from a team of cognitive scientists and evolutionary biologists finds that chimpanzees drum rhythmically, using regular spacing between drum hits. Their results show that eastern and western chimpanzees -- two distinct subspecies -- drum with distinguishable rhythms. The researchers say these findings suggest that the building blocks of human musicality arose in a common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans.

Yet another thing that humans used to consider unique to themselves that isn't.

All of the biggest U.S. cities are sinking

Groundwater pumping is the main cause in most.
A new study of the 28 most populous U.S. cities finds that all are sinking to one degree or another. The cities include not just those on the coasts, where relative sea level is a concern, but many in the interior. Furthermore, using newly granular data, the study finds that some cities are sinking at different rates in different spots, or sinking in some places and rising in others, potentially introducing stresses that could affect buildings and other infrastructure.

Today we went out to several places.

First we picked up mail and got food at Dairy Queen.

We went to the fairgrounds for the the Vintage Fair Market. They filled the Merchant's Barn with booths, but there wasn't much that appealed to us. We did buy an excellent blackberry cobbler. Soul Fire Arts was there, a local metalworker doing upcycled crafts, with a particularly impressive anglerfish.

Next we visited the Charleston Food Forest. I took some pictures, and I rescued some wild strawberries from the footpath which I have since potted up in two strawberry towers. So much has sprouted, flowers are blooming, and some green fruit is visible already!

Finally we went to Riley Creek Vintage. I bought 3 plant stands and a blue ceramic horse. I want to go back for several more of the plant stands, and a spectacular side table with a blue flower on it. My partner Doug also found several things including a couple additions to the glass room.

It has been a good day. \o/
