goals_on_dw is a new community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus will be New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here. Are you doing the Fannish 50 challenge in 2025? Sign up at that post, or look for fannish bloggers to follow. This is the last call for Winterfaire 2024. List a Booth for anything you sell that would make good holiday gifts, or comment with what you're shopping for to crowdsource ideas. There are links to two similar shopping events online. if you know others, please pass the word.
There is one open epic at present.
"Babes in the Pineywoods" belongs to the Big One. It belongs to the Big One thread of Polychrome Heroics. Bo-Art and Creamjeans are unsure what to make of this big black dog.
The weather has been chilly here. It drizzled today. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: two large flocks of sparrows simultaneously, at least two male cardinals and one female, several house finches, several mourning doves, a male and a female downy woodpecker separately, a tufted titmouse, a goldfinch, a northern flicker, and a fox squirrel.

Adaptive Equipment
Dec. 23rd, 2024 11:11 pmFlorida high schooler invents accessible tech that alerts visually impaired users to oncoming obstacles
“What I developed was a LiDAR [Light Detection and Ranging] navigational system to help people who are visually impaired,” Gay explained to podcast hosts Ginger Gadsden and Matt Austin.
[---8<---]
Gay’s invention uses LiDAR sensors — laser-based technology implemented in most modern cars — to topographically detect, identify, and categorize objects in its environment.
“Those sensors are replicating human vision,” she said.
Using haptic feedback, the sensors on the brim of the visor vibrate according to how close the user is to an oncoming obstacle.
This will be extremely useful for touch-dominant people in particular.

Celebrate HumanLight
Dec. 23rd, 2024 11:14 pmHumanLight on December 23rd
The HumanLight holiday presents an alternative reason to celebrate in the December holiday season!
Celebrate and express positive humanist ideals and values: Reason, Compassion, Hope. HumanLight illuminates a positive, secular vision. Celebrate and promote a positive vision of a better future — a future in which all people can identify with each other and try to behave with high moral standards — a future which people can build by working together for a happy, just and peaceful world, drawing on the best of our human nature and capacities. Celebrate human accomplishments and achievements that help build that future!

Poem: "A Peaceful Air of Reflection"
Dec. 23rd, 2024 11:18 pmThis poem is spillover from the November 5, 2024 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
see_also_friend. It also fills the "Easy Chair / Rocker" square in my 11-1-24 card for the Sleepytime Bear Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with
fuzzyred. It belongs to the series Peculiar Obligations.
