Birdfeeding
Jan. 27th, 2023 02:26 pmToday started out cloudy, snowflaked a bit, graupelled a bit, and is now partly sunny. Go figure.
I fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows and a pair of cardinals. I heard a woodpecker squeaking but didn't see it .
Yesterday when we were out, we saw a lot of geese flying. There was one massive wing that looked like a whole river delta and had maybe a hundred birds in it.
EDIT 1/27/23 -- I saw several mourning doves in the birdgift tree near the fly-through feeder. While walking outside, I heard geese bedding down for the night and saw them flapping a bit as they settled in the fields. Sleepy geese make sort of a wheedling, twittering sound rather than the loud navigational honks.

Seed Shopping
Jan. 27th, 2023 03:34 pmToday my order came from OPN Seed. I have marked the shipping envelope and individual bags with 2023.
Bee Lawn Mix
Our Bee Lawn Mix is for homeowners that want to plant an eco-friendly lawn alternative, but have height restrictions that would prevent them from planting some of our taller seed mixes. Whether it be urban or suburban, this mix of fescues, clovers and low growing, bee friendly flowers provide foraging, habitat and color to your landscape. Plant it in areas that receive at least 4 hours of sunlight a day.
(I tried this last year and really liked it for patching bare spots in the lawn.)
(This arrived in a large plastic ziplock bag.)
20th Anniversary Prairie Native Seed Mix
2018 marked our 20th year in business and we created our 20th Anniversary Prairie Seed Mix to celebrate. Fast forward to 2022 where we've freshened the mix up a bit to keep things fun and exciting! This mix will need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day and the finished height of this mix will be between 3 to 6 feet tall. Performs best when planted in well-drained soils.
(This arrived in a sealed foil bag.)

This is the most apt mashup I have seen: Batman and Lovecraft. :D All the dark and creepy headthings come together! And it's not fanfic: both sources are shared worlds or cycles, and both currently active.
New Year's Resolutions Check In
Jan. 27th, 2023 05:05 pmWe have almost reached the end of January! \o/ By now, most New Year's resolutions that are going to hit roadblocks or fail completely have already done so. About 95% crash and burn before the end of January. If you're still going, you've passed the roughest part. If you're having trouble or you've given up, there are options.
These are the previous check in posts:
New Year's Resolution Check-in January 6
New Year's Resolutions Check-in January 13
New Year's Resolutions Check In January 21
This post touches on other aspects of New Year's resolutions.

Review: Cooking alla Giudia
Jan. 27th, 2023 09:49 pmThis is one of the cookbooks that we got with holiday money. Neither of us had heard of Italian Jewish cooking before, although we're familiar with Italian and Jewish cuisines separately. This book makes a nice introduction to that, with bright pictures and charming recipes.
